I have a 32GB on the way thanks to the internets and am preparing my playlists and what exactly I'm going to put on there (42GB library).

I know the physical space is 29.80GB on a formatted 32GB drive, but I'm just wondering what the actual space on the iPod is when you take it out of the box, including Apple's software, etc. I looked around for the longest time and just can't find an answer.

Thanks in advance.

I think you should have around 29.6GB of usable space. I have a 16GB iPod and it has 14.84GB of actual storage. Most of the difference is due to manufacturing and software standards, very little space is taken up by Apple related software. I setup a simple fraction equation and the answer came out to about 29.6GB. I would make a playlist of 29GB in size just to have 500-600MB of free space for anything else that you want such as pictures, some music videos, one movie, etc.

It's pretty easy to trim down your library for transfer to the iPod. I'm certain you have some 1-star songs that you'll never listen to. That could save a lot of space right there!

Just prioritize. Ask yourself, "Am I *ever* going to feel the need to listen to/watch this when I'm on the go?" Chances are you'll answer "no" to that question for at least SOME of your library.
