Hey everyone,
I'm purchasing an iPod Touch from best Buy, and Someting has me a bit worried... It says (with software upgrades.) and lists the notepad and all that under it... with this upgrade will I be able to jailbreak my touch? or should I look elsewhere to purchase my touch?
Thanks.
Yes you can jailbreak it if you want.
I don't personally believe you should, however, as the App store is due to come out early July.
The App Store will allow you to download free Apps, and pay for some great ones.
Whether you want to jailbreak or not is up to you, but remember that jailbreaking will always void the warranty on your iPod touch, and with the App store, I question the reason to get it.
If you want to jailbreak, and then when App Store comes out restore and upgrade to OS X iPhone 2.0, then you can do so.
Also, note that this update to App Store will cost $9.95 US, paid via iTunes.

Wow. Always with the FUD...
Yes, technically the jailbreak does void your warranty. HOWEVER, all you have to do is restore and as Steve Jobs would say "Boom!" your warranty is valid again.
As for the jailbreak, you may want to wait for the AppStore but you should ALSO be able to jailbreak and have the benefit of BOTH communities putting together quality apps for your iPod Touch... There are some applications that will never make it into the AppStore for one reason or another (like the emulators for NES, SNES, etc.).

What's the FUD? Lol...
Getting mixed conclusions here.... so I can jailbreak and still use the app store? or no?
Anyone know if Best Buy Warranty covers broken screens? They've been very good to me with past iPods bricking or just messing up in general.

Yeah, the app store should still be accessible even if you jailbreak your touch. Personally I agree Derek - why limit yourself just to what they have at the app store? I'm sure they'll have some great apps, but the list of apps already available, many of which will never make it to the app store, is OVERWHELMING. There are literally hundreds.
Don't limit yourself...jailbreaking takes a few minutes, is easy as hell, and is completely reversible.
Also I wouldn't buy it from Best Buy. I went to Target and bought my 8gb touch. They wanted only $249 for it because it was without software upgrades. The version WITH the software upgrades was $299. Even if you want to pay for the upgrades, they are only $20, which still saves you $30. If you don't want to buy them, you can download after jailbreaking for free (also if you wanted to, I'm not condoning doing this).
They also gave me a $30 gift card, so I basically paid $219 for mine ;)

You won't be able to use the AppStore if it is jailbroken, at least not immediatly.

Couldn't I always just restore if I decided the appstore had more to offer than being jailbroken?

Yes, you can. That is why jailbreaking isn't really that big of a deal. You can always restore your iPod down the line and everything involved with jailbreaking an iPod disappears. imitchellg5 is right, you won't be able to use the app store and have your iPod jailbroken at the same time for awhile. The reason being is that the jailbreaking software won't be compatible with the 2.0 firmware. Give them time though as the jailbreaking community will eventually catch up to the 2.0 firmware. It is the same when Apple releases any firmware update though. It takes the jailbreaking community a good month or two to catch up, no big deal.
So you can jailbreak your iPod now and then wait to see what features the app store has. You don't have to upgrade if you don't like the features or you can upgrade and then downgrade your firmware later on.
