auto check mail question

what exactly does the auto check mail option do, does it check for mail when the ipod is "sleeping" ?

while its sleeping does it turn on the wifi and drain the heck out of your battery every 15 min, even if your not in a wifi area?

or only if its not sleeping ??

It does wake up to check. Not sure how much power it drains in a non-wifi area though, but if its in a wi-fi then it lasts about a day on idle.

I have mine set to every thirty minutes.
I have had it sitting next to me on my desk during the day, and i have never seen the screen come on when it's checking, but it obviously does "turn on" to an extent. And it would need a certain amount of power to do that(I suppose how long it stays turned on would depend on how many new e-mails it's downloading).
I usually charge mine up every day or two. But it's never fully depleted.
