I am anxiously awaiting the release of the 3G phone as I have put off buying an iphone in anticipation of the 3G release. I know I will need it due to being on the road a lot.
My question is, do you think that the release of the 3G phone will cause a hysteria of people camping out at Apple or AT&T stores for days or long hours at a time to get it, like with the 1st? I just dont know what to expect. I really want the phone, so I'd like to be prepared, but at the same time, I dont really have much interest or time in camping out to get it so I'd like to know if anyone thinks this will be a reality? Please let me know your opinion. Thanks

I surmise in the initial days of release that there will be camping at apple retail stores and AT&T stores. Camping out, however, requires at the very least a release date for the new iPhone. Insofar apple has not released a date, and it is not all together inconceivable that apple won't start selling the 3G iPhone on June 6th when it will reportedly be released.
In the event of immediate availability, expect to see long lines at stores, but immediate purchase and prompt delivery via the Internet.

Yes, there will be, on the night before the keynote, but I bet Steve is not going to announce the iPhone then. I still think he is going to wait until the end of the month, which is closer to the one year anniversary of the iPhone.
This WWDC will be about the SDK and maybe a revamp to the MBP and hopefully a new cinema display. Apple is starting to get into the habit of releasing things at their own events and the iPhone deserves to be the center of attention, and that would mess up Steve's keynote and anything else that they were releasing that day.
But when it is finally released, you will have long lines, just like one year ago, and you won't be able to buy one in the stores unless you get their right after the Fedex man gets there.

And how do you know Irish? The new iPhone will likely ship the day it is announced so no camping. And people never camp out for wwdc announcements.

Southsideirish, if you seriously believe that apple will not announce the new iPhone at the WWDC then why would people be camping out then? And the first name basis everyone has gotten so cozy with when referring to Steve jobs has really become rather sickening.

Last time I heard people were already camped out at the NY flagship store, and people were camped out last year at the Michigan Ave. store. Why will this year be different? No one knows when it will come out, but people will still want to be the first to have it.

well if I'm not mistaken those people ha no idea what so ever as to why they were in line in the first place. There was no new product and no reason to be in line.

I think there will be people camping out. I'm sure there will be folks like yourself that held off untill the 3G, I think will be the ones camping out. They held out this long for the 3G phone, they wouldnt want to wait any longer.

I dont see anyone camped out at a NYC store. Stop trying to hate on people who are Apple or iPhone fans.

I don't hate anyone, all I am saying is that only Steve Jobs knows when the iPhone will be released, and people will be camped out, waiting for the phone on Sunday, with no basis for doing it.
The reason I do not believe the iPhone will be released is that it would take over WWDC, and make any other news meaningless, but I still believe that people will be outside all of the Apple stores waiting to hear that the new iPhone is coming out after Steve's keynote. People will be camping to not only get the new iPhone, but also just to be in line with other Mac Fans. Remember Steve Wozniak camped out in San Francisco? Steve Wozniak can get an iPhone from Apple, he doesn't need to camp out, but he was doing it.
No one has any idea when the phone is coming out, but there are people who want the first ones, and if they think it is coming out Monday, then they are going to be in line this weekend.

I agree with you there, that if people want it bad enough they would wait in line to be the first to get it at any cost.
On the other hand that would also require some confirmed details about the new phone to be announced so that people would have at least some reason to wait in line. Other than 3G there really isnt anything the general public knows about the new iPhone save for the fact that it will have an mp3 player.
Additionally, it can be argued that there is a relatively scant amount of people willing to wait in line for a previously unannounced product beyond the diehard iPhone and apple fans, thus the very real possibility that there won't be any lines at all.

Steve Wozniak probably camped out for it since he's like Apples founder. And he still gets a salary from Apple for PR.
