International dial tone

Over the last week I've dialled some of my friends and for some reason occasionally get an international dial tone when I know they're definately not abroad.

Sadly whenever I hear this I always hang up for fear of being charged extortionate rates. I know they are getting the calls as they're rung me back.

Unless my missus is living a secret double life it's very odd......

It's not a problem really but has anyone else got any ideas/similar experiences?

I wasn't aware there is such a thing as an international dial tone, plus cell phones don't have dial tones. No, you are talking about the answer tone. You are charged by the destination# which shows up on your detailed bill so I wouldn't worry about it.
