need help adding files to library

ok i got my ipod today and i'm using itunes but i cant figure out how to add songs to the library. say i have a folder and it has songs in it right? how do i get those songs to show up in itunes under the library? i tried doing "add files" and "add folders" but they didnt show up, i tried dragging a file onto the library and it doesnt show up and i tried using windows explorer to take a file and put it in the my music/itunes/itunes library folder and it still doesnt work.....what exactly am i doing wrong? please help, i'm driving myself nuts over here :confused:

sorry i figured out my problem, i was trying to add windows audio files and not regular mp3 files :\
