Problem Synching

Hi. Can anyone help please. I have an iphone, replacement for nokia n95. On the nokia you could choose to synch your contacts/calendar either from pc to phone or phone to pc, depending on which you had changed the info on. I can't work out how to do this on the iphone and when I enter peoples new numbers on the phone they are deleted when I synch. Am I doing something wrong here? What is the default synch direction on the iphone? Thanks for any help with this.

At least with the Touch it sees which changed and take the info from the computer to the Touch if info changed on the PC or Touch to PC of info on the Touch changed. I assume this is the way it works on the iPhone as well.
