View Full Version : Photo Dimensions?

Hi,

When I take a picture in portrait and then view it (also in portrait) the picture fills the whole of the iPhone screen. When I take a picture in landscape and then view it in landscape there are black bars to the left and right of the picture (perhaps a third of an inch wide each).

Is this normal? Why does the iPhone do this? I would have thought the dimensions would be the same either way.

iPhone photos are either 1200x1600 or 1600x1200 depending on their orientation. Either way, that's a 4:3 ratio that doesn't match the iPhone screen ratio of 3:2. So to display the photo, it either needs to add in black bars or crop part of the photo.

Apparently for portrait photos viewed in portrait mode it is cropping part of the left and right of each photo (zoom out by pinching in and you'll see the cropped portion of your photos). For landscape photos viewed in landscape mode it is showing the entire photo but adding in black bars. I'm not sure why Apple chose to crop the photos one way and shrink to fit (black bars) the other way, but either the way the actual photos have the same dimensions.

It does seem a bit odd. Thanks for the explanation.
