Hi: I'm new to this forum and new to iPhone... I just bought a used one, and it didn't come with a manual, nor docking station. I don't have an account with AT&T, and I don't intend to get one (I'm stuck in a Sprint contract), so I'll just use the iPhone like an iPod Touch. My question is: how can I completely erase/reset everything? For example, it still reads, "Stacy's iPhone" in the about section... I'm guessing I need to get a dock to accomplish this, but if there's a way to do it without a dock please let me know. Thanks! I'm loving the iPhone so far!
You will need a 30-pin iPod/iPhone USB connector.
You can reset all settings/content on the iPhone by simply going to Settings > General > Reset and choosing the setting that suits you.
To change the name settings on the iPhone, connect to a computer with the latest iTunes installed. When the iPhone comes up, you can choose to erase the iPhone and start again if you wish, and to sync with your music, you must do this.
Then you get to choose the name of the iPhone, and get to change all the sync settings to get everything you want on there.
I hope this assists you.

Cool, thanks! I didn't realize I could use my iPod connector -- so I just did the factory set-up process. The only thing that seems to remain is the phone number that the original owner apparently had... is it possible to remove that? Thanks again!

do a restore through iTunes but don't activate. If you want to unlock it use liberty to jailbreak. Personally I would just live with the phone number in there than go through all the hassle.

Whoa -- I just did a search for Liberty & jailbreak... Like I mentioned, I'm new to iPhone, so I'm not sure I entirely understand what "unlocking" means... Is there a mod that will allow me to use my existing Sprint account on my iPhone?? If so, is it difficult to do? THANKS in advance -- this could be exciting!

Yes, this is what unlocking will do.
If so, is it difficult to do?
Not at all. Use iLiberty+

Pong - in short, no there is no way for the iPhone to work with sprint. It runs on a different cell tower network. AT&T and iPhone work with gsm as does t mobile.

Aw, darn. I guess Ed was referring to other carriers?
Yes, either Ed was refering to other carriers, or he was unaware of the limitation.
iPhone only runs on the GSM network. The reason for this is because when distributing overseas, the GSM network is the most used.
Sprint uses CDMA, what is considered an inferior technology in some places, (like Australia) and is incompatible with the iPhone's phone network.
