Headphone, dead left ear?

I've now gone through 3 pairs of headphones in the last month. Each time, my left ear has gone dead. The first was a pair of Rivet in-ear headphones which are supposed to be iPhone compatible. The other two were honestly just standard headphones where I shaved down the rubber around the plug to make them fit.

Has anyone else come across an issue like this? I'm curious if either I just have horrible (but coincidental) luck, if my iPhone is acting up, or if that left ear (which usually has the mic, so maybe it's powered differently in some way?) is known to have issues(?)

its actually the right bud that has the in-line mic, but that shouldnt matter anyways.. The only thing I would say is to stop cutting your earbuds up and just spend $6 on an adapter. That might solve your problem right there.
