Hey everyone. I currently own an iPod Touch and my wife likes is so much that I am considering getting her an iphone and consolidating all her other gadgets. Right now she carries an 8gb ipod nano, a Palm Tungsten E, and a Motorola Razr V3. I figured if I got her an iPhone then she can have all in one, so here are my questions and I appreciate any help with these questions:

1. Will iphone jailbreak just like the touch?
2. We have AT&T right now, are iphones like other at&t phones were we can just open the back and insert her sim card from her current phone?
3. If so her sim card is a 3g sim card, will it work with the current iphones that arent 3G?
4. Does the current iphone have wi-fi?
5. I read somewere were the new iphone will have mp3 capability? Does this mean that the current one doest? Or can you upload your music using itunes just like any other ipod?

I think this is for now, thanks in advance. David

I can answer some of them....

1) Don't know as mine isn't jailbroken
2) It's in the top and no..it's registered to a specific sim card even one on the same network won't work
3) see above
4) yup
5) Doesn't support mp3 but the second part of your question is right, you just put everything in through itunes as with a normal ipod

Hope that helps in some way.

It does help, so I cant buy a used iphone say on craigs list and put my sim card in and use it. I have to contact AT&T and have them send me a specific sim card that works for the iphone?

You could just go to the apple.com site or the at&t site and read all this there right?? It is all pretty self explanitory. And it supports MP3, I have no idea what either fo you are talking about

Cessna, if you have to ask this many questions, is the iPhone even for you, I mean these are basic questions answered on Apples and AT&T's site. By saying I have no idea what either of you are talking about, I mean, not literally i have no idea, it means, both of you are very ignorant of the workings of the iphone, and your general inquires should start at those sites. Please don't ask me to keep my remarks to myself, I was pointing you to where to get basic info you asked of. But seriously this phone isn't for you if you have to aks if it supports MP3's. You questions are basic, start at those sites, you'd be amazed at what you learn by searching and reading, then constantly asking and asking...

The short answer to this question is that the iPhone does everything the iPod touch does and more. In fact, there is nothing the iPod touch has over the iPhone other than a higher-capacity model (the iPod touch tops out at 32GB, whereas the iPhone tops out at 16GB).

What you get in the iPhone is basically an iPod touch with phone capabilities. This means the ability to make and receive phone calls, to send and receive SMS messages, and to use cellular (GPRS/EDGE) data, so that you can still surf and check your e-mail even when you're not near a wireless access point.

Past history would also seem to indicate that while Apple may charge for future firmware updates to the iPod touch, they provide them for the iPhone at no charge.

Using an iPhone with a non-iPhone SIM card will require your iPhone to at least be jailbroken, if not completely SIM-unlocked. AT&T SIM cards can be used just by jailbreaking -- this is necessary as the normal iPhone requires "activation" via iTunes, and iTunes will only activate an iPhone-specific SIM card on an iPhone plan, but you don't need to do a SIM-unlock for an AT&T SIM card.

That having been said, if you're going to get the most out of the iPhone, you're best to switch your AT&T account over to a proper iPhone plan, since this will include data usage and Visual Voicemail. In this case you would activate the SIM card that comes with the iPhone (transferring your existing AT&T account over to it), and simply discard the one you are presently using.

Last time I checked forums were for asking questions. I am not an idiot I know you didn't mean literally. If these questions cant be answered here in the iphone forums then were else would I find the answers. I did check the website and it isnt were clear. I wanted the opinion of an actual owner. The website doesnt tell you that you cant take your sim card off your existing AT&T phone and put it in the iphone, but I found that answer here. I really hate the idiots like that you that build up their post counts by telling people to go find the answers some were else. I did not ask a nano question in a iphone forum, I asked an iphone question in an iphone forums. So once again I will say, that if you dont have anything constructive to say, then keep your trap shut!

Thank you Jhollington. This makes sense. I think what will happen, is that I will just purchase the phone through the AT&T website and add switch my wifes existing plan over to an iphone friendly plan. Thanks for all the answers.

cessna that sounds like a good idea given your situation. I think your wife will be happy with re iPhone and its functions, and you may even become a little jealous :)

Anyways, I hope it works out for her, and I'm sure it will given that she is coming from a RAZR ::puke::

Also, you can use your iPhone sim card in other phones as well. Its not locked to the iPhone.

Thanks for that last bit of info, im glad to hear that I can take my iphone sim card over because we will keep her razr just in case something happens to her iphone, that way we can just continue using her razr until the problem gets fixed.

If you are considering buying a used one take a look at the AT&T site for the refurbished versions. I believe they put them back up again and you can save some nice money but also get a warranty.

Good luck!!

Ok then another stupid questions. I've got about 7000 mp3's on my system and the guy in the Apple shop said the only way to get them onto my iPhone was to burn then to a disk then put them in through Itunes....

If there is another way of doing this I would LOVE to know how. Bare in mind it took me 3 months to figure out the microphone had a clicker in it! Why are there no instructions for these things!

If they're already in MP3 format, and they're on the same computer you're going to be running iTunes on, then you literally just need to import them directly into iTunes.

You can do this either with the File, Add to Library menu option, or simply dragging and dropping them directly onto the iTunes window.

Burning a disc might be necessary to transfer them between computers (not an audio CD, mind you, but simply burning the files to a CD), but it's certainly not necessary just to import them into iTunes.
