iPhone thinks there's headphones in the jack

When talking on my iPhone, I occasionally lose sound for a few minutes. Upon further investigation, I find that the problem is that my iPhone thinks there's headphones in the jack when there actually isn't; my iPod component also experiences this problem, but I witness the volume bar move and then the pause button change to a play button.

How can I fix this problem? I don't see anything abnormal in my headphone slot

I think its actually a software glitch not hardware. The only way I know of to deal with it is to plug headphones in the jack and unplug real quick.

Well it happens continuously, and many times unplugging headphones doesn't do anything.

Should I restore the firmware?
