Hey all,

My friends are telling me to hold off on my purchase of the touch.

The reason is because they will probably released an updated version of it later in the year, perhaps some time after the new iPhone comes out.

Anyway, is there a new design on the horizon or are they just increasing the capacity?

Any idea how the pricing structure would be? (e.g. dropping the 8GB, and using the 16GB to fill its spot, etc etc)

Thanks!

Thanks!Go get yourself a magic 8 ball at the local toy shop and you'll get just as good of answers as to your specific questions. We can be reasonably sure that the touch line will get some sort of refresh this fall, what that refresh will entail is anyone's guess. They *should* have a wholesale generation change based on feedback and reviews of the 1G touch, but with Apple, I wouldn't bet on anything.

A general rule of thumb is to mark your calender for September/October/early November when it comes to Apple and their iPods. Apple always releases a new generation iPod around that time or they update a current model. Take Fall of 2005 as an example, Apple released the all new 5G iPod with video playing capabilities. Then, in Fall of 2006, Apple released the 5.5G iPod. The 5.5G iPod had a brighter screen, longer battery playback time, and larger capacity than the 5.5G iPod. It was still essentially the same thing with some minor upgrades here and there.

So Apple might actually come out with a new generation iPod touch this Fall or they could hold back and release one with minor upgrades. If they release a whole new generation touch then I say yes, wait. If they release one with minor upgrades then it is up to you but, in all honesty, I would get one now just so I could enjoy the features. The only problem is that no one knows exactly what Apple will be doing. We just have a theory (a solid theory) about when Apple will be doing their thing.

Either way, Apple themselves won't drop the prices of older iPod touch models. 3rd party retailers might but Apple won't. I remember when the 4G iPod was released back in 2004. Best Buy continued to carry the 3G iPod at the same price and then put the 4G iPod out the next day. The 3G iPods were just taken off the shelves. So 3rd party retailers might not even drop their prices. I know Best Buy did the same thing when the 5G iPod came out and the 5.5G iPod. I didn't pay attention when the iPod classic came out as I was looking at the iPod touch.

You can use this guide to see historical patterns, as if that's any real help - http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

I agree with Code Monkey - get a Magic 8 ball... Everything is just a guess. Heck I don't think anyone on this board even predicted the release of the 32GB model of the iPod Touch -- most figured it wouldn't drop until June at the earliest...

I would be absolutely amazed if they had a price drop, I would think the current price will hold and the now ones will be slightly more. The break my come if you by an i phone and sign on for a 2 year contract you might get it for $200. Apple has a hot product and there is no reason to lower price as long as demand is high.

Historically new iPods come out in the fall, just ahead of the big holiday shopping season. Apple also has historically sold enough iPods that they haven't needed to cut prices or make major changes before the fall. The new fall models typically have more memory at each price point, in addition to other upgrades.

IF past trends held true, we might see a 3G iPhone but without major memory upgrades (at a given price point.) If so, then there won't be any big changes to the iPod Touch in June.

There is an outside possibility that Apple could really try to knock it out of the park with a 3G iPhone and boost memory in addition to adding 3G. If so, I would imagine they'd have to adjust the iPod Touch line too, although maybe not as it would also have ramifications for the iPod Nano. For example, they could introduce a 3G 16GB iPhone at $399, and still leave the iPod Touch line as is until fall.

That would suck because I just got a Touch. I assume they will release another software update sometime June or July. That would suck if they revamped the Touch. I dont have the money to go get another revamped Touch. *sigh*

That is why you should always do market research before spending money on new tech. Apple will come out with a new iPod touch or add some upgrades to the older ones sometime this Fall. They have been doing that for 7 years now, I don't think they are going to change their business model that much. You have at least 4 months of knowing that your iPod touch is top-of-the-line. Sure, you could have waited but you would be waiting without an iPod touch.
