Hi all. I'm new to the forum and reading basically all the posts, learning as much as possible. I'm sure its been covered, but I'm looking for a original 1st gen ipod that works for windows, the one with the scroll wheel.

I've been reading and there were 2 versions of the original, one that worked only on mac, and one that worked in windows. It should be a 5gb, I believe.

I know they are very difficult to find. But I'd be interested in purchasing a functioning one.

PM me if you have one, or info on where to get one..

That used to be true but not anymore, any early mac only or windows ipod can be reformatted to work with either os. I have a Windows desktop and a Mac laptop and format my ipods for either os when desired. I do have a 1st gen 5gb I'd sell if the offer were right.

If Offer were Right, sounds like you are looking for tons of cash. Money aside, are you sure that the original version will work. I've read a bunch of information, and from what I have found there were 2 versions of the 5gb released. 1 was reseased in 2001 that only worked on the mac, and then in 2002 it was re-released to work with PC as well...in conjunction with the release of the 10gb touch wheel.

Is it possible you have the gen 1.1....eg 2002 release, that was compatable on both. Or am is mistaken. It would be pretty cool if the very original worked on PC now. But, like I said I'm unsure.

I've been curious about this as well and will pull my 1st gen out and see.

On your quest to find a 1st gen make sure to get the serial number prior to sale so you can confirm that it is a true 1st gen. Many times people will get ones that weren't truly the 1st or may end up with a refurbed one (which obviously isn't as valuable)

This site will give you information based on the apple serial number: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

and this site has a listing of all of the model numbers of iPods.

I can confirm that you can restore a Macintosh 1st Gen iPod with the Windows firmware. I will say the syncing was not nearly as pleasant as a modern day iPod but it does indeed work. (I was using 64bit Windows so maybe that had something to do with it) It's now back to Macintosh firmware where it belongs :D Hope this is helpful to you, good luck in your quest!

Hi,

So I finally bit the bullet and purchased a first gen 5gb ipod. I was able to format it to work on windows and it works great. The scroll wheel physically turns and there no cover on the firewire port. Thought I would share.
