View Full Version : "Unusual" iPod uses?

I was just wondering what kind of uses people have for the iPod apart from listening to music (and using the included extra programs of course). I have a few which take advantage of the portable HD function and it'd be interesting to find out what anyone else does!
1) I keep a small MAME installation on the drive so that I can plug in for a quick game of "Kung-Fu Master" or "Double Dragon" anywhere :)
2) Saved a copy of the Sample FAQ (http://www.the-breaks.com) so that when I'm plugged into a PC I can browse around what samples have been used in tracks I'm listening to. Haven't got a working search function but still...
3) Not particularly special, but as a part-time DJ I usually use the Notes function to keep a list of tracks I'm looking out for (on vinyl, no less!)
Considering portable hard drives are much cheaper, I used it primarily for music, isn't that what its all about in the end?

True, but the amount of storage sacrificed for all that still wouldn't even hold one album. Besides that, I always carry it around, 'cos I'm a walkman fiend :)

I use the notes to remember what albums I want to buy. I always seem to forget and end up buying everything but what I had originally wanted.

right now my ipod holds half a year worth of my work on my dissertation paper.
at the end of the day i always save one copy on my ipod, one copy on my notebook, and i upload one copy to my webspace.
i really don't wanna loose those pages... (knock on wood).

I wrote some tagging/ripping PHP software, which I keep on my iPod. I use it for tagging MP3s I get, and giving people copies of my music. It's in PHP, and includes the windows PHP binaries. As it's PHP it also runs on Macs and Linux boxes... it's one thing to put music on your iPod, but quite another to copy it off when you want :)
Oh yeah, and I also keep about 50 TV episodes (simpsons/futurama/family guy/south park) and approx. 8 films on there (rotate 'em every-so-often). And most of my software in ISO form...

He just drags them on there like you would anything else, but he can't view them.
I use mine for music most of the time, but a lot of my friends also have iPods so I might go over there and if they've got something I like, I'll just put it on my iPod. Hehe.
My iPod is always in my pocket, 24/7. If it's not, it feels like I'm not wearing pants. Strange.

You can never have too many copies of that kind of work...

And i am getting into a state of mild paranoia about this.
So the iPod eased my fears of loosing it quite a bit.
Nice side effect of this shiny little thing.

There is a club in london where DJ's use Ipods to DJ 3 tracks each in turn after taking a ticket, its a great night and a cool use of the Ipod too.

Oh an amendum, When Pod2g0 comes out for Windows pods... i will use it for movie times, news, sports, weather, e-mail, directions, and other assorted Pod2go stuff.
