I ordered one of the $250 refurb iphones and it should be in my hands any time now. I was planning on waiting to get one until my AT&T contract was up for renewal (which is in June) but this was too much of a deal to pass up.

I've been doing some reading and from what I've gathered this is what I have to do to get my iPhone functional on my current AT&T contract:

Insert current att sim card (its not one of the 3G ones if it matters)
Use ziPhone to unlock
update firmware, restore in itunes
unlock again
Soon after, phone will detect network and display ATT/cingular

Then I should be able to make a test call, right?
Also, there is no visual voicemail, right? I can live without it.

The big question I have though is in regarding to web browsing over EDGE. I know my current plan doesn't include unlimited data, so is there a monthy add-on that will allow me to browse/email over EDGE for a flat monthly extra fee, or do I have skip it and wait until June and use the iphone plan?

Thanks.

Add the unlimited plan and you will be covered.

Well... if you want to pay thousands of dollar due to kilobit rates for edge data, then you dont need to have the unlimited data from AT&T.

Otherwise, its recommended that you do get the unlimited data if you plan to access the internet via EDGE.

It's important to note that the iPhone pulls in data even when you are not techincally doing anything and that everytime it accesses the network for data, you will be paying money.

if you don't have an unlimited data plan make sure to turn of edge via bossprefs, otherwise the iphone will access the internet nonetheless.

if you are surfing the internet only a from time to time you don't need the unlimited data plan, that's what I did. but if you want to surf regularly on-the-go than it will be way too expensive without the unlimited data plan.
