So i thought i remember reading about a work around to sending a text message, through something like a email and not be charged to text. Could this be done (or was I just tripping)?

000-555-1234@teleflip.com will send a text to that phone number. What you do is add the email address to your contact and use that to send a normal email which will be converted to a text. The recipient can even reply, and it will come back to you as an email. Only works for text, no mms

when you send someone a sms through teleflip, your return email address will be where the recipients can reply back to.

only problem with this little hack as you call it for free sms is that you will not be notified automatically as soon as someone sends it. You would have to have your email checked every so often and that sucks. yes you can use the fake push email but that will drain your battery down quick.

it's true that using teleflip isn't a frugal with the battery as true sms, but it is a option.
