Sometimes the little E which means edge of course disappears and turns into a little block. I don't know what this means. I've dropped my phone a couple of times and its hit the antenna part on the bottom. Could this be affecting edge? Also sometimes I can't use safari and it says edge or wifi connection required ... weird... and my email doesn't check regularly in the 15 minutes like it is supposed to. Thanks for the replies in advance.

This is normal behavior for an iPhone. Sometimes the EDGE network is not available. It's just like 3G (EDGE is actually 2.5G) and is only available when you are in range of the EDGE network.
YouTube for example, requires EDGE or a wireless network to run so this is normal behavior again.
You're email will not check automatically if the EDGE network is not available.
Danny.

sorry I have to ask: how can you drop an iphone "a couple of times"? be more careful :D
the block means that only GPRS is available but not edge ;-)

i've been looking on the O2 website for coverage maps for EDGE but can't find it - i'm in east kent and so far i've not seen E on the display (got an orange mobile still and it regularly shows E) :(

well if you don't have an E I would simply say that you area is not covered (you have to know that every carrier has it's own edge-network just like they have their own gsm-network. so if it works with one carrier that simply means that that carrier has your area covered, but another carrier doesn't)
