Whats Apple doing to close the gap between iPhone and the LG Voyager? The V has so many options that the Iphone doesn't have such as video, voice command, GPS and a real keyboard. This alternative to the iPhone is a real threat to Apples attempt to dominate the smart phone market. What does apple plan to do about it?

It's really a matter of opinion for most, and what you're going to get going to an iphone forum is going to be strongly biased towards the iphone.

What will beat the voyager in the end though (IMO) is a couple of things. First and foremost is its ease of use. Many of us (myself included), just simply don't need all of the bells and whistles included in many of these smartphones. I have no need for GPS. The proximity that the cellular gps gets me is more than enough, as I'm usually looking for a business or address. Video in the US is crippled and expensive. If we had a good selection of channels and it was cheap to use, then I would consider it. This is just not the case. I've also tried a real keyboard, and have found I type almost as fast on the iphone's screen.

The iPhone is simple in what it does, but it's that simplicity that allows for such a wide range of users to enjoy it. With one press I can access the web, check my email, or start the iPod. It's also intuitive, and fairly easy to use with one hand. When I press on the screen, I can click on even a small link with pretty decent precision, no stylus required. Other smartphones are just not like that. My last one I couldn't even stand to call people using the on-screen dialer because it came no where close to recognizing when I was pressing down on it. Even my fiancee, who hated my smartphone, admits that this one is tolerable and easy to use.

Second is the integration of the iPod/iTunes. The last 2 phones I've owned both had mp3 players built in. I hardly used them at all because it was a pain to sync them (you had to select each song individually by going into the different folders), they didn't retain their tags, and I couldn't play songs purchased from iTunes. It was a serious pain just to enjoy a few tunes, so I never changed what songs were on there.

Finally, the SDK program. This has enormous potential, and from what I've seen so far, bests anything out there currently. The iPhone has a fairly decent processor, and this leads to a much greater opportunity for development. That said, I am very curious as to how the Android phone system will evolve, since I believe that it actually has greater potential than the iPhone due to its resolve to be an "open" platform.

Of course, as I mentioned, this is just my own opinion, and it is obviously biased towards my experiences. There are plenty of people out there who would not give up their windows mobile or symbian device for anything in the world. No worries, we all have our reasons.

Yeah, the iPhone SDK, in my working time, provides far more graphics potential, and makes the iPhone more than anything else out there. Other objects are great in some areas, like phone and email.

With the SDK it makes it brilliant as:

Fully customizable features (basically best in everything)
Phone
iPod
Internet
Email
Games console (need convincing? go to see the Apple keynote for March 6th and watch some of the games providers after just a fortnights work)

With it's potential being so wide, with mega brilliant portable graphics, a great processor, and desktop class programs, it seems hard to see other devices stand up.

I just looked at the specs... It's really not in the same class as the iPhone's potential. If you understand the basis of iPhone, the iPhone is a computer, and with the SDK, it is fully customizable... this thing is like a small, rigid organiser in comparison.

yeah the only thing the lg has on the iPhone is stereo Bluetooth and Bluetooth syncing capabilities. Other than that the voyager was just a weak attempt to do battle with the iPhone.

Like moe said, tv and 3g in the US are still very infantile. Not only that, but the voyager is dependent on cellular coverage for its Internet, whereas iPhone has wifi which is both faster and free.

In my opinion the voyager has never really "competed" with the iPhone. I think the real competition will come from iPhone generation 2.

HA-ha. Apple is gonna ignore it as usual, that's what.

Once again, Apple doesn't sell u FEATURES, it sells you STYLE. That's Apple, u should know.

But not all is lost, they just opened up the phone for 3rd party software development, so watch for a smorgasboard of applications in the near future.

I myself decided to go with iPhone because I was VERY happy Apple's previous iPod releases. Apple is known for maintaining a very high level of quality control with durable hardware and stable, functional software offered as standard features of any apple product. It is this dedication to high quality that puts Apple a cut above their competition.;)

U did?

I think so until the latest iPod Classic, seems to have a bit more factory problems compared with previous generations, judging from all the posts here. iPhone hardware, 9 months into it, looks good.

Functional Software offered as standard features
I wasn't so sure about that until they announced the SDK. Just a few months back ppl were complaining it can't even offer full PDA functionality. Can't access their MS mail. blah-blah.

Should be OK now but <psshhh> they gonna charge u for the upcoming stuff. Hold on to ur wallet.

Don't you have to pay a monthly fee to get turn-by- turn directions on the Voyager? I prefer GPS built into my car. Manufacturers still don't understand why people prefer the iPhone over mere impersonators. Most people value simplicity over a bounty of features. I love the large vivid screen. The screen rotation and zoom features in Safari are awesome.

Well...I have had my iPhone for about two weeks now and I love it so far. I think your point about simplicity is a good one. Simple yet functional will get me every time;) I do wish it had a few more features however. Video would be nice and seems like a no brainer.

Yeah iphone is not perfect (although very close) but it is deffinatelly the way of the future. With apple finally sticking their heads out of their buts and releasing the SDK iPhone will become the ultimate handheald. We will deffinately see 3g on the iPhone this summer and hopefully gps along with Bluetooth audio.

There was so much talk about Linux iPhone killer which is not even out yet. And google phone won't even come close. iPhone is the ultimate handheld gadget.

Really Apple has to do what Apple is already doing.

Think of it this way the Voyager is........ the Voyager, it is released and it is what it is basically till a new one comes out.

The iphone is a work in progress, its pretty good out of the box, but if you think about it its almost a mini mac book, SDK is coming and every big firmware brings more and more features.

(Btw it does have video, just does it differently and not for free).

The voyager isnt bad at all but its interface isnt the best at all even with the full keyboard. My mother has verizon and was considering one after she played with my iphone alot she thought it would be like a Verizon version of the iphone. After playing with the Voyager she is either going to switch to AT&T or buy a regular phone she didnt like it at all.

She is not a tech person at all and was able to figure out the iphone, and thats the beauty of it and many Apple products that people will never understand. It may not have the most features, but the ones it does have are much easier to use then the competition and we all sometimes forget that not everyone out there is a tech geek like us. I would way we are maybe 10% of the population.

One last point, just look at the sales figures, last time I checked the Voyager wasnt flying off the shelves even though its cheaper.
