well i'm hoping that the updates for both will be good.
and once i figure which one i'm getting this gen, i'll get the other for next gen.

You can't really decide on something which isn't here.

That said - they're both potentially great devices but I'm thinking the touch will be the 'must-have' for next gen.

Classic is a mature product. If it's updated at all (beyond capacity updates which are a given) then the changes will be minor.

Touch is an emerging platform and iPod Touch is a first generation product. The next version of it is likely to have far more significant changes than the Classic.

So, which will be better? For one thing, as drewhiggins points out, we have no idea what the next generation of these devices will look like, so it's folly to try and make judgments with no knowledge at all. For another, Touch and Classic are targeted to vastly different market segments, so making a direct comparison between the two is pretty silly on the face of it.

Probably be best to get the classic this gen and the iPod Touch next gen..the classic has for the most part reached its peak..the only thing I can see them doing for it is capacity/battery updates, color changes and MAYBE JUST MAYBE a increase on the screen size.

The iPod Touch is in its infant stages so its pretty safe to say the iPod touch will recieve the biggest update between the two.

So basically the classic is pretty well matured with what is going to be and apple is likely going to focus far more on upgrading the touch than the classic.

You need to think more creatively. There's no reason, for example, why Apple wouldn't add Wi-Fi. Just one of many potential enhancements that the Classic line could get.

Yeah, your logic works.

Problem being... How far are they going to bring the touch, or drop it and develop a second phone (Perhaps iPhone Prepaid)

Er... well, what would be the point? A mini iTunes wifi store, and perhaps youtube? They would be so downgraded for click wheel navigation it's not funny.

If you haven't got the basic idea right in seven years then you've got no hope.

The classic is a very mature product. The touch and iPhone are not.

Wait you just got done saying..

"Classic is a mature product. If it's updated at all (beyond capacity updates which are a given) then the changes will be minor."

Wifi isn't minor, nor is it very practical for a click wheel.

I can name plenty of things they could do to the classic, what I was stating is what apple would possibly do to it. I'm pretty sure with the iPod Touch/iPhone being the main focus with apple that the classic is going to intentionally be held back to keep it from canabalizing iPod Touch/iPhone sales.

They can add a camera, add Wifi, enlarge the screen, open a SDK for it, increase the capacity and battery life, put a speaker in the unit, etc...but logic suggests none of these would make it to the classic as it would run too much into the iPod Touch/iPhone line.

I think they'll probably increase the screen size, up the capacity and battery life and that'll be it for next year.

How about wireless synch? Streaming radio? There are all sorts of possibilities that don't necessarily include the features we see on iPhones and Touch.

We're speculating here, right? If I were putting money on it, I'd predict that Classic stays pretty much as is. BUT if we're going to let ourselves go into flights of fancy, why not speculate that Wi-Fi might work on Classic.

And Wi-Fi "[isn't] very practical for a click wheel" makes absolutely no sense. Wi-Fi isn't an application, it's a networking protocol. The usefulness of the click wheel would be determined by what the Wi-Fi is used for, not by its inclusion alone.

Maybe, maybe not. Apple has been known to surprise before. They'll do it again.

Again, you're limiting your imagination. Why speculate about whole rafts of features that already exist on Touch and iPhone? Why not features that neither have? Why not features that NO iPod has?

Apple isn't going to drop Touch. The future of Touch has very little to do with the release of other items in the iPhone line. There's practically no question that Apple will develop other iPhones... AND other Touch devices.
