If i put my ipod on sleep mode (press the black button) will the wifi keep running and drain my batteries?

Short answer no, wifi shuts down when in sleep mode, search next time. And welcome :)

You can test yourself - just open up a command line in Windows (Start > Run > Cmd) or Mac (Terminal) and type "ping -n 100 <YOUR IPADDRESS>"

Approx. 30 seconds after you put your iPod Touch to sleep, the Wi-Fi will disappear and the pings will start failing...

In case u don't feel like looking up wiki for PING=HELLO in the network world. and the device you are saying hello to, if he's there says HELLO back.
