I've wanted an iPod touch since the day I heard there was going to be one. Because it's basically an iPhone without the phone. I already have a cool phone I enjoy, and I don't really care for the feature of iPod and a phone in one device.

Anyways, I think I may hold out on buying an iPod touch till the second generation for the fact that I hate the metal case on the back. Why is this still a design for Apple products? It scratches, fingerprints show up like crazy on it and it just looks awful like it doesn't fit with the cool design on front. Do you think the 2nd gen. iPod touch will have a different back? Maybe one like the iPhone but black instead of sliver, like the black on the bottom of the iPhone. That would look so much better with black back cover and a silver Apple logo on it.

Also, I'm curious as to why they would put a scratch resistant touch screen on front, then the most scratchable surface ever on the back. :confused:

So do you think they will change the back for the 2nd gen?

If your main concern is the back on an iPod, then you shouldn't buy iPods. The back hasn't changed in quite sometime, and why would they change it, it does look 'sexy', and sexy is what Apple wants....Besides if scratching is a concern, get a back shield from Power Support or the such, they are very protective while showing no signs of being on the device hardly.

Hey you can always get a Zune or an Archos... :)

Also I don't think there will be much a difference in look for the second gen, maybe more features, a cosmetic button or two, and a new OS, but they're all if's, if anyone knew it would be out there

Lol, when did I say it was my main concern? My main concern right now is money, and hoping that the next generation will have internal speakers haha. And yes the back's of iPod's have changed in the past, like the iPod nano 1st generation to the 2nd generation.

I was simply asking if anyone thinks that the back will change in the 2nd generation. Not an alternative product. I've owned an iPod ever since 2004.

Internal speakers? I think if they were going to add them, they would have done it in one of the previous 5 generations of iPods :)

Sorry I fig'd with most of the post devoted to the back of the ipod it was a main concern of yours, I didn't see much regarding the cost, it seems by reading again it's mostly about the back of the ipod to me :) so....sorry I might have misread the only topic that was discussed...it does cost alot though, its a great device though, you're missing out! :)

I admit a silver logo on black would be nice but eh, no big deal. Aren't u gonna buy a case for it anyways? I prefer naked myself, but those rubber-like case for the iPhone/Touch look pretty cool to me.

I don't think speakers will make it in, the silver back is what identifys it as an Ipod. I wouldn't hold your breath on a new touch but the same with more memory. As they just releasted the developer kit for iphones and touches as there are now. I would go get one now and buy a back shield or case of some short. Its worth having now, don't wait.

Seriously though, I NEVER SAID IT WAS THE MAIN OR ONLY CONCERN! Take it as that. Yes, I wrote a paragraph about how I don't like the back of the iPod. Because for the sake of the post I was wondering what the thoughts on this changing would be. Forgive me for not writing in the money and other concerns in the first post. Also you don't need to quote this. I would appreciate if we got back on topic. Thanks.

I might as well give up.

The topic was (if you would read back in the first post) do you think they will ever change the back of the iPod touch to something more appealing or scratch resistant.

Now that we are all up to speed, what do some of you think about this idea?

Also, I want to add that I don't like putting cases on my iPods because it hides away the "cool" look of it. I prefer them to be without a case. That's why I am ranting on why Apple doesn't just make the back less scratch able so we all aren't buying cases to cover up the design.

that's just it. They don't make the back scrach proof (as you know they can) because all the $ to be made on cases + accessories

And like the first post said right after yours, if they haven't done it by now with the iPods, I doubt they'll do it anytime soon.

Perhaps you should look into the Invisible Shield if you're so concerned about hiding it away. I got one for just that reason and it looks great.
