Network selection?

What is this option on the iPhone (and indeed any mobile phone) for?

It's always an option on every mobile, and it seems to scan and offer whatever networks it can find a signal for, and is usually always set to "Automatic".

Why would the end user need such an option? Surely it depends what network's SIM card is in?

Why is there such an option on EVERY mobile you see?

I, for example, am and end-user who needs this.
I live in germany near the swiss border. here, swiss networks often have a better strength than the local german networks and therefor most mobile phones think that you are in switzerland and are choosing a swiss network - which of course sucks since it costs roaming charges if you place a call or write a text message.

so you can tell the phone to not select any other network but your home network which does not allow the phone to choose a swiss network.
