i'm currently deciding between an ipod touch 32gb and a 16gb iphone. i'm still a relatively new at&t customer (5 months) and am currently using a razr v3xx which has 3g service while the iphone doesn't.
anyway, i always heard that you need a new two-year contract to get the iphone and can't just replace my current phone for it? is this still true today?
any help would be appreciated.

You can now get an iPhone and use it with your currant AT&T service. You need to use ziphone, and activate/jailbreak it. It take about 3min with no issues.
I returned my 32gb iTouch for the 16gb iPhone. Good Choice.

so the only way to unlock and activate it as a current at&t customer is to jailbreak it?
i read on apple's site that you can sign up as a current customer but that you need to add an extra plan to it that adds either $20/$30/$40 to my current plan. so i can just buy the iphone from the apple store, use ziphone to jailbreak it, then start using it right away? is the process easy?

the answer the man gave above is very off. Go to the apple site they lay it out easy. Getting an iPhone as an AT&T customer can't be easier no need to jailbreak like he said your number and account take about ten min to transfer once activated by iTunes. But check apples site all answers are there and simple

is it true that you need to add an extra plan though? that's what it says on the apple site. the plan that's laid out has me paying $20 minimum.

If you want to add an extra plan and pay the extra $$$, I’m sure they will work with you and gladly take your money. Or, you can jailbreak like I stated above and not pay anything extra. Just make sure you do have an unlimited data plan. ( note: Visual voicemail mail will not work without an official iPhone plan)....

I think the info with jailbreak and unlock was meant to avoid a new contract. I've had Cingular and AT&T for years now and when I activated my iPhone, sure enough a new contract came with it. Luckily your current contract doesn't have to be up

let me see if i have this right. the apple site says that existing customers must add a data plan which includes unlimited web/email and visual voicemail. can i still jailbreak it without adding a new data plan but still get the unlimited web and email?

If you don't get the data plan and don't have one currently then you'll have an outragous bill for all the data usage that happens behind the scenes without you even going on the Internet. If you just unlock and put your current sim in I would suggest getting some kind of data plan although im not sure the noniphone plans are.

same questions.
I just bought an iphone and I started a plan, but I have no intention on getting a data plan.
is jailbreaking it the best option?
there's no SSN (999-99-9999) code that would work like before?

Just plug it in and sign a new contract. No need for your old one to be up. Add data to your existing plan(just a helpful suggestion you'll be sorry if you don't have one) and you'll be up and running. The iPhone uses the Internet alot even if you only use safari when on wifi.

there's no SSN (999-99-9999) code that would work like before?
For the record, the "fake SSN" option was just to offer you a "GoPhone" plan. This still required a monthly payment, and includes a data plan. The resulting price point is actually more expensive than a post-paid contract, but is provided as an option for those who can't pass the necessary credit checks to qualify for a proper contract.
The fake SSN was really just to make you fail the credit check so you would be offered the GoPhone plan instead.
If you do qualify for a contract, then the only advantage of going with the GoPhone plan is that you're not locked in for two years. The downside is that you'll pay more per month, since the GoPhone plan isn't a standard pay-as-you-go plan -- it still requires a minimum monthly "recharge" payment, and unless you're not using your iPhone at all, in about six months you probably would have paid more overall than it would have cost you to cancel your normal AT&T contract.

yellowb, if you intend to use the phone with your current contract and don't want a data plan, I'd suggest jailbreaking and activating it (using iLiberty+ or ZiPhone).
iPhone doesn't use Edge automatically unless you use Safari, Weather, Email or any other internet based application. I use mine only with wifi and so far paid just $2.55 for data (once I didn't notice wifi was off and kept browsing).
To unlock the full potential of iPhone i.e. to run thousands of available native applications, it has to be jailbroken in any case.
EDIT: Paying AT&T $50 and activating using a fake SSN for goPhone service is good to make sure that your warranty is valid. Apple stores don't entertain warranty requests if the phone is not activated.

thanks for adding the activation=warranty. I didn't know that l, but doesn't mean much to me as my phone is out of warranty. good info anyway
