yeah.
1)go in itunes, pick a song you like.
2) now the iphone can play ringtones up to 30 seconds. because of that, you right-click that song, go to the information-window, than go to the options-tab. here you have the fields "start at" and "stop at". fill them out so your songs is 30 seconds long or less (so for example tell itunes to start at 1:30 and stop at 2:00).
3) now convert the song to AAC (right-click -> convert to AAC).
4) right-click the AAC file (which is 30 seconds or less long), click "show in explorer" or "show in finder", rename the file from .m4a to .m4r and drag it into itunes. it will show up as a ringtone now and sync to your iphone.
5) you can delete the old AAC-entry from itunes since you now have the file as a ringtone.

nice... it worked for me. although dragging the new *.m4r files wouldn't drop into my library without changing the view to the ringtone category first (in iTunes). thanks for the tip! i've been trying to get a bunch of these done b/c i've finally convinced the boss to get me one for my next company phone, and the upcoming 3G will be nice (i hope, i hope).

oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. dragging the songs in itunes itself doesn't work, you have to drag the song into the list of ringtones (don't know why).

anyway, @tom it seems to me like you have file extensions hidden. to make them visible go into your explorer, click the Layout button, go to Folder Options, click the View tab and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

when you did this, your 30 second (or less) song file should be named something like "Song Name.m4a" and you just rename it to "Song Name.m4r" and drag it into the ringtones list in itunes and it should work.

note that I sometimes had problems syncing ringtones that were exactly 30 seconds, so I usually make them 28-29 seconds long.

Or, the easier way if you on a Mac is to just drag the song from iTunes into an Empty Garageband window.

Click the Loop Button and select the section you want for your ringtone.

Click Share>Ringtone and it'll be put in your iTunes ringtones for you.

I probably made over 200 ringtones for my iPhone all from my music library.

can you create a ringtone from a song you added to your library from a CD that wasn't purchased through iTunes? Also, I don't see "convert to AAC" when I right click on a song... why not? I'm on XP. Thanks.

probably because you chose another format in the itunes settings. I think it's the settings for ripping CDs where you can choose between AAC and MP3. set this to MP3 and you'll see convert to AAC.

OK i now have a problem. I added one ringtone that i created, works fine. i then created a second from a different song, and when i add it, i see that new song twice on the device under "custom," and the first one is gone. Any ideas?

Okay, instead of 30 seconds... do 29 seconds. Sometimes the ringtone ends up just a tad over 30 seconds if you chose 30 seconds.

Besides, the ringtone doesnt even last 30 seconds when someone calls you.

So might as well make it 29 seconds then you'd have no hassle.

So if you want a clip from the song to become your ringtone that starts at .... say....

1:30

Then choose 1:30 as the start time and 1:59 as the end time.
