Hi guys,
I just picked up my 32 gb iPod Touch, and plugged 'er into the USB port, and am charging it.
I did NOT turn it on though.
Is it necessary to charge the unit *before* turning it on and doing the setup on it ?
I don't want to limit the battery life by doing something wrong ( like turning it on ) before I ask.
Thanks for any info guys ! :)

Like any rechargeable battery, it’s always better to fully charge it before use. It will come charged so you can play with it if you can’t wait.

Thanks for the info.
I have to admit, I'm not too impressed with Apple in that there are NO words about this - anywhere in the manual.
It would be good in future if they could clarify this.

They didn't put it in the manual because it really doesn't matter. Optimal charge for long term storage of lithum batteries is 40%..thats about where they put it when they come from the factory..draining the remaining amount and then charging it isn't going to affect the battery anymore than just hooking it on the charger.
In fact I wager to think it'd make the iPod Touch gauge more accurate if you used it first before giving it a complete charge since the battery gauges are wildly inaccurate from the factory.

it really doesn't matter. as long as the touch is connected to your computer the battery will not drain and therefor you can set it up in itunes and whatnot.
check apples battery page for further info:

the only thing you shouldn't do to provide the longest battery experience, is drop the battery power below 40%.
