I recently bought a 2nd generation 2GB iPod shuffle, and I was wondering whether I actually needed a case for it (silicone) or not. Would the anodized aluminum hold up fine on its own? Will the plastic need protection? Will the switches and headphone out/jack need protection? What do you guys think, does the 2nd gen shuffle need a case?

NO! I have one that was run over by a car and it only has three tiny scratches on the front. The clip got smashed in a bit but remained fully functional. I straightened it out some for sake of appearance. The plastic parts are fine. I dropped a first gen all plastic Shuffle in a puddle once, and it's still working today. You do not need a case, the Shuffle is indestructible.

The Shuffle is pretty tough, as stated above, but if you are a perfectionist and you want your iPod to be flawless, then you will need a case.
Ive dropped my Shuffle a couple times and one of those made an ugly dent in the edge of the aluminum casing, the other time I dropped it, it fell on some gravel, and of course the sharp rocks owned it and made some ugly scratches (all my fault, of course), so to tell you the truth, I wish my Shuffle was in a case all those times, and if I had access to one, I would certainly get it.
