Hello,
I own a 8 gb iPod touch and use the Internet connectivity feature a lot. I was wondering if there are any other Internet connection mode than wifi ? For example, is there a way to connect via the physical wire ? Thanks a lot.

thanks for letting me know. I thought I heard something about a "EDGE" connection - do you know what that is ?

Touch means u hookup a cellphone along with your Touch. Is that acceptable to you? and the data rate is dial-up slow. U understand dial-up?

I guess if your work only has hard-wire connection u can install a very short range WIFI router but be aware when the IT folks find out, yer behind is outta there! :)

Isn't EDGE only available for the iPhone? Or am I mistaken? I don't think there's any way you can connect an iPod touch with a separate cellphone.

Yes Edge is for the iPhone not the touch two totally different devices, well similar, but touch has no phone. Goto apple.com they have it all laid out in a terrificly easy manner.

I see - thanks for clarifying what EDGE is - I just read the details in the iPhone manual. My work does have wireless, but it has a special security setup where you need to install a client certificate in your laptop ... so I can't connect from the iPod.
.
I guess I need a wireless router with a short range. Either way, if the security audit guys found out they wouldn't be too happy. Oh well.

What about for guests? Lots of times, the IT ppl would setup something for visiting vendors/branch office folks/partners with limited access and too cumbersome to have them install a certificate everytime they show up.

Good Point - but the building I work at is for engineers only and no visitors ever come here. They probably have an easier to join wireless signal in the Visitors Building. We aren't even allowed to go in all the areas there.
.
I am thinking of getting a wireless router, turning off DHCP and turning off SSID broadcast. This way no one should be able to find out that wireless is enabled unless they were able to get to the router admin page.

You sure have tight security at work, don't you? :)

Yeah, buying an access point (AP) with no DHCP will do. I also agree that it's a good idea to not broadcast SSID. Just make sure you hide the AP under your desk. :)

O'kay. See ya at the unemployment. :)

Remember, the non-overlapping WIFI channels are 1-6-11.

I am a paranoid kind of guy so, after reading the last post - I think I will just live with not connecting the ipod to the internet at work. lol.

Oh come on now. Using an iPod touch without the Internet is like half-disabling it. Enjoy it while you can! :)

Well ... first of all, I need a spare wireless router and i don't think it makes sense to buy a new one just for this. Let me look on ebay.

If this helps, what you need is an access point, not a full router. Access points don't have as many features as routers therefore you may be able to find them cheaper. Just my 2 cents.

Not trying to scare u, but since I AM IT.....

It's now easier than ever to track what employees are doing on the Net. WE KNOW what sites you are going to and how often and most important of all, how long. So with that in mind... any usage out of ordinary and/or repeat visits to frindge/adults sites, yer browsing yourself out of the door.

But how you do guys have the resources to monitor internet activity of so many employees. I guess you guys have "bad-lists" which alerts you when someone goes there ?
.
From work - I read slashdot obsessively - so hopefully thats not out of line. But I don't go to adult websites from work. Occasionally I have watched funny youtube clips that others at the office told me about. I have gone to facebook sometimes.
.
Hmmm ... someone blipped me a NFL URL with pictures of top Cheerleaders. They were hot.
.
If I SSH into my home linux machine and bring up a browser with X display, and go to sites from there, then there is no way to detect that right ? (except for heavy traffic to my home machine)

Probably a good idea. If it's on your network, and they look, they can (and will) find it. Just turning off SSID doesn't hide it very well from a good IT dept.

Here's a novel idea...how about when you're at work, you WORK! I don't think most workplaces mind the occasional wander on the information superhighway, but when they hired you they probably didn't put "surf the Internet" on your job description.

;)

I'm just sayin'

Is SSH even open? Where I work the ports that allow any remote access are blocked. Of course it's a school. And heaven FORBID you even think about a proxy site. My phone rings within 2 minutes of one of my students attempting proxies.

Hehe .. yes I do work. Reading articles are like keeping up with the latest technology - so I could rationalize that to be part of work. SSH ports are open as I have brought up things in X display. A lot of the proxy sites don't work, but some still do. For example they blocked linux.org and we were able to use this "validator" site to view it.

In the ole days when storage and cpu were expensive, it wasn't cost effective to do so, but these days, storing hundreds of gigs of logs form the firewall is just what, $99 bux?

So a reporting software is ran at intervals against the log and the top resource users, top visited sites blah - blah is compiled.

Being in engineering, well u gotta go out there and look for info. Just don't torrent porn that's all.

Correct. We can't tell where you are going, but if excessive traffic, then it may raise the boss' eyebrow.
