View Full Version : How many actual Gigs are there on the 32GB?

Any idea what I'd be looking at? I have about 25GB of music, and it'd be nice to be able to throw a few games and a movie or two on it.

I know it is more than 25 gigabytes.
It is 29.80 gigs; if I'm not mistaken.

It would be less than 29.8GB as the 16GB model has about 14.7GB of actual usable space. I am thinking that it would be along the lines of 25-27GB of actual usable space by the time you factor in any built-in applications. So more than likely you won't be able to fit every single song you own on the iPod touch. Then again, you should purchase an iPod touch (even the 32GB model) if you plan on carrying around absolutely every song and video that you own.

That might be true but there was person on this forum that got one and made a thread about it. He said it had more than expected. He said it had 29.8 gigabytes.

to calculate the *approximate* space for any size drive, just take how large the drive is and multiply that number by .93
For example, a 32GB drive with that formula will have 29.76GB to use, which is close to the 29.80GB a few others have stated
There is some variation for FAT32 vs NTFS vs Mac formatted drives, but the above calculation formula will get you close.
Hope that helps

To be more precise, divide 32,000,000,000 bytes with (1,024 x 1,024 x 1,024). The answer is 29.8023, which rounds to 29.80 GB.
[EDIT] I know you said *approximate." No intention to degrade your post. :)

I just opened up my new 32g and it shows 29.96 gigs available

easy to calculate for any new drive:
take the gigs you should have (32) and multiply them by thousand to get the megabytes you have. multiplay it by 1000 two more times to first get kilobytes and then bytes.
now divide it by 1024 three times and you're back to the gb you got which results in
29.8GB
considering that apple takes away 300MB for their system partition from you you'll probably end up somewhere around 29.5GB to use. this, of course, can differ slightly from ipod to ipod since not all hard drives have exactly 32000000000 bytes ;-)

Not to be a kill-joy, but that's pretty much what I said above (#7)! :D :D

Wow, I am surprised at the amount of storage given that the 16GB model seems to be screwed a bit more. I don't know if the firmware factors in there even more or what.

I know, I just explained it a little further so he doesn't have to ask again in the future :D

well, you can do the same calculation for the 16GB:
16*1000*1000*1000/1024/1024/1024 = 14.9GB
system partition takes up 300MB, so we got 14.6GB ;-)
