Is there any way to get my iPod to give me a little notice whenever a contact has a birthday?
Or would I have to add them all to the calendar for that to happen?

strangely not. I was very suprised when I found out that apple missed this. They did a really nice job with the contacts so you can tap on a phone number (on the iphone), an adress or an email adress and it opens up the app that belongs to it, but they totally missed birthdays.
I hope we'll see that in the future so that all bdays get added to the calender automatically but right now that's not possible.
