Ok, normally I'm in the UK and my iPhone connects either through O2 or wifi spots, no problems.

I'm in Italy now, I have disabled data roaming so that I am not charged for data over the network here.

But when I try and use wifi spots here, even when there is a strong signal, the iPhone finds them, connects, but then none of the applications will workj. I get error messages saying "can't find server" even though a strong signal is detected and people on laptops connect fine.

What's going on?

I am guessing that while a Wi-Fi hotspot is connected to, if you go into Safari browser it will probably ask you for a username and password. The people on the laptops have probably already paid for the service. Much like T-Mobile Hotspots or BT Openzone where you pay so much before hand to use any of its hotspots.

Sometimes I am askewd for a password or to sign-up, but I also get this problem in free public wifi spots, I am not asked for a password and I simply get an error message from Safari saying "cannot connect to server" Safari (or any other application) does not ask for a password or anything, it sees the wifi signal, the wifi strength is at full on top of the iPhone display, but it simply wont connect!
