There are ways to use any MP3 a ringtone for you iPhone. I don't currently have time to get the links but do a search here in the forums (esp. the iPhone forum) and you'll find some instructions how to do it.

(if you are using Windows XP)
Use just about any audio editing program to select the portion of the song you want to play as a ring tone (keep it under about thirty-five seconds). Once it's been imported to iTunes, select "convert selection to ACC". Click on the new ACC song in iTunes and select "find in Windows Explorer". You will be directed to the file (it's a .m4a file) Change the extension to .m4r, then double click the file to import to ringtones. You should now have your ringtone.
Hope that helps :)
...or better still, just follow the link that Dim gave...(gosh, I type slow..)

I converted it to an AAC file and changed the extension to M4R. I see that it you guys say it has to be 30 long. How do I make it that short?

So I have an mp3 file that's about 8 seconds long. I converted it to m4r by just changing the extension.
How do I use it as a ringtone? I tried to drag and drop it into the iTunes ringtones window but it won't work.
iTunes has this annoying feature that only allows you to make a ringtone out of songs purchased from the iTunes store. I was trying to get around this feature.
Any suggestions?

Make sure your file isn't .m4r.m4a
I've had that happen when you change it incorrectly, there should be a window that states "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DO THIS" because Microsoft has a way of being annoying.
Other then that, I wonder if the most recent iTunes removed this feature, which I doubt.
Double check that and send another post
