So i purchased an iPod touch today. i synched it up and have the newest version of iTunes running. I don't want to download the new software for $20 since i'm going to jailbreak the iPod. Problem i'm having is that after clicking "no thanks" to the software upgrade i get the "iPod touch January upgrade" screen in the iPod touch tab. I can't access my iPod now! WTF! i'm frustrated! what am i doing wrong?

Dude it's happening to millions of people. Now I know they would like for us to think it's a bug. But it's just another way for Apple to sucker in their customers. Not right. I would like to know what Wilder_K_Wight & Dumb Monkey will have to say about this.

Solution: Close iTunes. Plug in your iPod. Load up iTunes & hit the "X" in the center of iTunes before it can reach to the iTMS. If you're too slow & can't do this, just disconnect from the Internet before launching iTunes.

I know this might sound silly. But make sure you have the latest iTunes installed. I mean actually run the setup.exe on the new itunes and give that a go.

Same thing was happening to me. We wiped off the iPod and seems that the problem was solved, no more annoying screen.

I just ended up buying the update. Sad but I was going to do it anyway at some point.

If you're on a mac, and have "Little snitch" installed, you can use that to block itunes access to the update server. It seems to want to go out on port 443 (secure). You may have to reopen the port if you want to make a purchase, though.

I for one am never going to give apple a cent for this update.

..Well, ok. If the update was $.01, then maybe...

You can also right click on your iPod in the "device" section, then click "sync".

This solution worked perfectly for me. Thanks!

This has go to be the must frustrating, stupid thing Apple did. Clicking "Remind Me Later" takes you to another page about updating the software. How about "No thanks. Remind me never."
