Macrumors is reporting, via those who broke the 1.1.3 update, that soon either by update or SDK Apps, that Apple will give Safari flash support, but it said for iPhone only. But I assume the same could be said for the touch....

Thoughts?

saw this on digg. Credible but kinda scary for me. I'm addicted to kdice and if I can play it whenever I want I'll never get anything done.

That's what I've heard, too, but I'm not sure it will benefit me much. I mean, won't flash playback be awfully heavy on iPhone / iPod touch?

Ideally Apple (or whoever is developing it) will provide an easy switch to turn Flash on and off. Otherwise, I see a lot of users complaining about horrible battery life...

Agreed. I'd imagine it's easy to add that option to the Safari settings.

flash files are not that big. a *.bmp file over edge is worse :D

Well, .bmp files aren't typically used in webpages, except in very small things like counters, etc. I run across flash ads much more often.

Ok so...

Feb. 26 = SDK, Flash, and $100 price cut.

Allegedly!

That would be awesome!

or Steve Jobs will say " now in every iPod we make starting today will have the flash support built in And existing iPod owners will pay $20 to update" lol hehe

I payed $20 for the apps and I'd pay $25 for Flash!

Flash is all over the internet.

If Mac wants to prove that they have "the whole internet" in the iPhone then they must put flash!

But it should be given to us free.

Since it wasn't on the iPhone, I doubt they'd charge for it.

It may just be me, but does Flash matter that much? Most of the sites that make heavy use of Flash are too slow on iPod touch anyway, aren't they?

I will crash Safari 90% more than it already does. It's a stupid idea.

Think about all the flash based music sites though, XM and Sirius, wouldn't they now work?

I love the idea of Flash for the touch and Iphone as i have created a WiFi site just for the home wireless network that allows the family to connect and use their ipods to watch any 1 of our few hundred movies that i have in our media library on the server computer, Toughest part is finding a good streaming media server that isnt Flash based, I CANT WAIT FOR FLASH it will keep me from having to encode every file to be ipod/itunes/apple compliant. Id prefer to keep my music as mp3's and movies as avi's and flash would allow me to do that and still stream them on WiFi with no loss of quality.

That's my point. I believe enabling Flash support on a mobile device will do more harm than good.

Flash support would make this device almost perfect. I really have a tough time surfing the web without flash. Seem as though almost every website I visit require flash. Hope they hurry.

Aside from annoying ads, I don't see much flashed used in my browsing. I hope they allow it to be turned off.

Annoying ads only ?
You never visit sites with Photo Galleries ? Music Players ? Video Players ? All that stuff is Flash based. Java players and stuff have pretty much been faded out due to flash capabilities.

I think if you removed your flash player from your computer you would find a lot more of the content than you thought on the sites you visit is flash.

Remove flash from my computer and I'd throw the darn thing away. I tried to watch movie trailers on yahoo with my touch but I couldn't cause it said I need flash. Can only watch apple movie trailers without it.

Wifi connection lasts what? a mere 3 hours, a flash intensive site..we're talking 1.5hrs all the juice that'd take.

Stupid, unless the battery times are greatly improved with the next update.

daihard
02-23-2008, 02:27 AM
It is a matter of how you look at it. The number of flash-intensive sites will not go down as long as we accept flash like that. I for one don't like flash and avoid flash sites as much as possible. I even write to webadmins for the sites that heavily depend upon flash. That's my "evangelism."

No, I do not browse to photo galleries, music players, etc. I especially wouldn't bother doing that on a portable device where most of my browsing is done over Edge network. Not saying they shouldn't include it, just at least make it optional so I can continue browsing without decreased battery life , slower page loading and less browser issues.

You know, there are mobile devices that have flash support already... Why shouldn't Apple do it?

DerekVOF
02-23-2008, 09:43 AM
Apple probably will do it. Thing is, most of those mobile devices that have Flash support, use an old, watered down version that's like 2 versions back in terms of functionality. You know Apple - they don't want to do it unless Steve Jobs can get up on stage and crow that this is "the BEST version of Flash EVER on a mobile device."

The ones I've seen all use flash player 9

DerekVOF

If you say so. All the mobiles I've seen have used Flash Lite which based on Flash 7 (while the current version is Flash 9). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_Lite

DerekVOF,

I believe the latest firmware for the Nokia N800 uses Flash 9.

But again, the N800 isn't so much a mobile device as it is a portable tablet computer. :-)
