I'm thinking of buying a new/sealed touch on Craigslist to save a hundred bucks or so (even more since there is no tax)
And i'm wondering if i get dead pixels or any other issues - will i be able to take it to my local apple store and get it fixed or a replacement?

Not sure - why not call up an Apple Store and ask?

you can go to the apple store for repair (you are not able to return it to apple) but you will need a receipt I guess. I know apple can know from the serial number when you bought the touch, but I still guess they need a receipt.

Out of all the times I've gone to replace/exchange my iPod at a retail store, I've never been asked for a receipt.

When you first sync your iPod, it will be registered with Apple. The serial number is assigned to your Apple ID.
So when you go to the Apple Store, they look up your Apple ID, and check the serial number against the data they have.
If the iPod is STOLEN, then it may not be great to have its serial number attached to your name. That would be my biggest fear with an iPod from craigslist. Sometimes it's a safe place to deal, and others it's a great place to pick up stolen merchandise.
