IPhone and TV Reception

I am thinking about buying an IPhone but I don't believe that I can view TV shows (from NBC.com and CBS.com) on the IPhone without purchasing them from ITunes. I can view episodes on my computer (for free) but when I tried it on an IPhone in the AT&T store, it wanted to download an Adobe (Flashdrive?) application. Someone said that it needs to download Java also. My question is can I download something that will allow me to view TV shows without purchasing them from ITunes? Thanks

If you have a DVD recorder then you can record the shows off of TV and convert them for the iPod.
