Anyone else seen a reduction in performance when using youtube on the touch ? When I first got it a week or so ago I couldnt believe how smoothly it ran. Now I seem to be getting sow to connects and then not getting the data quick enough to have uninterupted play.
The browser seems fine, just seems to be youtube. Anyone had this and had to do a reset or anything wierd to correct ?
My broadband seems to be ok although I will look into it further.

Yep, the YouTube app is pretty slow.
I think it has something to do with the speed it can cache the files and the amount of free memory the iPod doesn't have, especially after jailbreaking.
It should be reworked so it saves the file to a temporary space on disk if there's room - like a paging file type system - thus it'll be tonnes quicker.

Can the slowdown be related to the five (or was it six?) undersea Internet cables damaged recently?

No, I don't believe so.
1) This has been going on for quite a lot longer than that, even on earlier firmwares.
2) The cables are supposed to be fixed now.

The wierd thing is, it seemed fine at first. The only thing I can relate it to maybe is that I have started to watch longer clips ( episodes of shows ) where as at first I was just watching maybe some music vids that were like 3 or 4 mins so maybe it wasnt as apparant.
Do you think the touch are going through some kind of seperate server at youtube ?
Im in UK btw if that makes a difference to any related problems.

I think it just varies, but I can't figure out the reason for the variance. One day I can tap on a video and it'll start playing within just a few seconds. Later the same day, I'll tap another video and it'll buffer and buffer and buffer for over a minute before I get anything... both videos the same length (roughly). Maybe YouTube just hasn't devoted as many resources here since there are no ads to profit from?

So the consensus is that there are playback issues with YouTube on iPod touch? I may just be lucky, but I have not run into any such issues yet. I fear for myself...

Been playing around with this a little to try to isolate the problem, eg router, time of day etc.
Well after playing around a little last night it seems to me that its certain videos on youtube. Everything on the featured, popular sections seemed to be playing fine and yet when I was searching for a certain clip ( a uk show called Never Mind the Buzzcocks ) they just would not buffer at all.
Why would this be ? This Buzzcocks clips are around 9 mins in length, but I did play a few other clips of this length that seemed to be ok.
Anyone shed any light ?

After some 5-second research of my own, I've come to the conclusion that it's the conversion time on YouTube's servers from flash to iPod and because that would slow everything down for YouTube, the iPod conversions don't get priority thus it takes forever.
Also, once converted, it probably routes through some ####ty bangbang old server to us.
