I signed up for a 2 year contract back in 10/07 and I bought the iphone. I want to sell it now but I'm unsure of what steps I need to take.

If I call att and deactivate the phone (it's the only one on my account) will my contract automatically be terminated because there's no phone on the account?

If not, could I just cancel the $30 data fee and go down to the cheapest plan available to keep the contract open til I buy a new phone?

I don't know, but I do know that if you cancel your cell phone contract you will get slapped with a fee. I'm guessing $400 for cancelling a two year plan

Well, these questions would probably be better asked of an AT&T customer service rep in terms of getting the details on how to do this, but the bottom line is that you will need to maintain some kind of account in order to not terminate your contract. Whether or not AT&T will allow you to keep a lower-priced account or not is entirely a matter of what their policies are on this.

I know on Rogers (in Canada) you can take a contract account right down the very bare minimum plan and still be covered under the same contract. I don't know how it is with AT&T in general, or the iPhone plan specifically (which might carry some additional conditions attached to it).

You can change features during the contract period but there is definitely going to be a cancellation fee of 300-400US. BTW, I just changed, lowered, my SMS, and my daughter raised hers and it was not a problem.
