Strange thing happened when I upgraded to 1.1.3, I seem to have lost EDGE and just get GPRS instead. I think this has a knock on effect on the locate me app in maps as it doesn't seem to work properly (although the stand alone Locate Me app works fine).

I've tried resetting the network settings and re-applying the APN address for Orange (UK) but all to no avail.

Could it be that the service is just down in my area? I only doubt this as its never had this little coverage before.

Any thoughts?

There is a known problem that occurs on some iPhones after upgrading to the jailbroken v1.1.3 with regards to the EDGE settings not saving properly or not being applied properly.

The simplest fix seems to be to do a "Reset Network Settings" which can be found under Settings, General, Reset. Note that this will reset all of your network settings, including any WiFi access points you've been connected to, so you'll need to set these up again.

Once you've done the settings reset, you should be able to go in and reconfigure your EDGE settings manually (Settings, General, Network, EDGE), and connect properly via EDGE.

As for the Google Maps location feature, the jailbroken v1.1.3 firmware seems to prevent this from working as well. The current theory is that this is due to the fact that the jailbreak methods presently don't update the actual modem firmware which may be required for the cellular location feature.

The workaround is to simply run either LocateMe or Navizon GPS at least once after each restart of your iPhone. After that, the Google Maps location feature should start working. Something in the code that Navizon/LocateMe use must activate something in the iPhone that doesn't kick in otherwise.

OK, I'll give the reset another try. There are any apps which fix the bug are there?

I think if you look in Install.app, there is an EDGE Settings Fix app in there somewhere, but I actually suspect it does a "Reset Network Settings" operation automatically.

The ones I have seen are for 1.1.1 and won't install and the reset still isn't working. Should I try to re-install 1.1.3 via the install.app application?

Well, reinstalling v1.1.3 won't work unless you go through the entire process again -- downgrade to v1.1.1, jailbreak and then re-upgrade to v1.1.3.

Since that's such a headache, I'd wait a bit to make sure that there isn't a problem with the EDGE network itself, and double-check your APN settings just to make sure -- also make sure you've put in a userid and password if one is required by your operator.

I had a bit of a scare myself right after I updated to v1.1.3... The next morning my EDGE seemed to be having trouble connecting. Since I had been fine the day before, I just waited it out... It resolved itself in a couple of hours, so I shrugged it off and chalked it up to the cellular network.

I have now discovered that the issue occurred when upgrading from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 as I don't have EDGE and am running 1.1.2. Has anyone else had this problem or similar. I am running the Orange network in the UK.

Thanks in advance

Well, I don't recall that I ever had any problems with EDGE on v1.1.2, but then again I'm also using a different cellular carrier.

You might want to try the v1.1.1 EDGE fix anyway. I'm fairly certain that the changes it makes under the hood apply equally in v1.1.2 as they do in v1.1.1. Really, the differences between these two versions in terms of the core OS were very minor. v1.1.3 is another story entirely, however.

what data plan do you have in Canada?

I'm on the Rogers 200MB for $100/month plan. It's highway robbery compared to what's available south of the border, but at least it's a business expense for me.

I was actually on the same basic plan when I was using a Blackberry and later on my Nokia E90, so it wasn't a change that came with the iPhone for me, and to be fair the iPhone has been more efficient on data use than the E90 was, so the 200MB has been adequate.

I think I have done just about everything I can to get my iPhone working but to no available. I have downgraded to 1.1.1 numerous times. I have downgraded the baseband and virginised the phone as well and then upgraded through 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 and still no EDGE. This is really weird as although there are a few other ;people who have the same problem it doesn't seem to be something that is universal.

Anyone has any thoughts about any of this?
