View Full Version : iPhone isn't exactly like an iPod

I suppose it's my fault really for not fully checking, but I presumed that considering the iPhone has a built in iPod and also has the same dock connector that it would work like an iPod with devices built to use them.
I bought a Pioneer headunit for my car a while back (DEH-P85BT) and have been using it with a nano and it's great, fully controllable onscreen as if you were navigating the ipod screens.
I shell out all this dosh on a new 16Gb iPhone only to find out that despite it being "our best iPod ever" it doesn't actually work with a lot of the iPod compatible devices such as my car stereo :shake:
Ah well, just a bit of a rant I suppose. I've searched around for a fix but it looks like I'll either have to just not use it with my car, or use the aux in socket and lose the charging and track control.

Have you tried turning Airplane mode on with your iPhone? Go the the settings and enable it.
Plug the iPhone into your car and a message will pop up saying that the device is not compatable with the iPhone. Dismiss the message and everything should be gravy.
My iPhone works with my Pioneer DEH-P9800BT in the car and my Bose sound dock only when I enable Airplane mode.

No I haven't tried that - it does prompt me to do it though when I plug it in so maybe that turns it into pretty much the same as an iPod Touch.
Big problem is though that I actually NEED it as a phone and would rather have the phone on.
Seems like you can't have it both ways.

Yeah I pretty much have to pick between having a phone or an iPod touch while I'm in the car. That's the only reason I usually keep my old 3G iPod in the glove box.
Hopefully Pioneer or Apple has a solution for this sometime soon...

I'm not sure if they will though as I don't think you can upgrade the firmware on the headunit unless maybe it accepts an update cd which I doubt it would.
Unless maybe they bring out some sort of inline adapter that goes inbetween the iPhone and the headunit to fool it into thinking it's an iPod.
The phone part is too important to me at present so I think I'll just go down the aux-in route for now (or keep on using my Nano).

I have a similar problem. I just got a new car, bit with it being an 06 it doesnt have line in like most brand new cars do. I'm now using my gf fm transmitter since her car has an aux jack and have to choose between hearing the gsm feedback or turning airplane mode on.

I believe this is up to the car stereo manufacturers for future models that will support the iPhone. It is the manufacturers after all that claim their stereos work with iPods. This isn't anything Apple is responsible for. Future stereo models will be iPhone capable as well as iPod capable.

Precisely.
Apple doesn't sell a car adapter of their own (HU controlled) and u never heard Jobs pitching "works in your car too!"
Honestly, I haven't heard anybody who's 100% happy with their HU-controlled interface, and they are expensive and not guaranteed to work on the next generation of iPods. AUX ALWAYS work, cheap, reliable, so u have to control it through the iPhone, no big deal to me, just get a good dock, or do a custom dock if u have the cash and that should be fine.

I had the same thing happen to me. I could play the music on my iPhone and it would work, but I couldn't control it from the deck like I could with other iPods. Until one day last week where all of a sudden it did work. Sometimes it gives me an error message and I just unplug it and plug it back in a few times and then it recognizes it. It prompts me to turn on airplane mode but I say no because like you i need it as a phone too. I have a pioneer 5900ib, or something like that, I don't remember exactly what it is. But maybe just try plugging it in and unplugging it a few times and see what happens.

FIXED IT! :D
From a very helpful user from another forum (avforums) there is a very simple solution to my problem - You plug the iPhone in before turning on the radio/car ignition.
I tried it this morning, plugged in my iPhone and then got the usual message about do I want to turn airplane mode on (which I declined) and so the screen went into the "accessory connected" one. I started the car, the headunit came on and it works flawlessly. I've got full control via the headunit and the steering wheel controls. I can browse through artists, songs, albums, playlists etc just as I could before.
Top stuff :D

gazhowell,
What kind of adapter/cable do you use to connect Pioneer headunit to iPhone?
How do you control Pioneer headunit from the searing wheel?
Thanks.

I originally bought an Alpine CDE 9852 iPod controller head unit for my car and I couldn't of been happier with the controller features and stability of the unit.
Also to my surprise, it even worked with the 16 gig iPhone.
I think Alpine make excellent control surfaces for iPod's/iPhone's and I would recommend them to anyone thinking about doing getting one. Installation was extremely easy and after 2 years of having the HU, it has never let me down once.

i have to say that ive got a 5th gen hooked up to my alpine headunit and it work fantastically well. i think in the uk its hooked up to the headunit with the 420 ipod kit. charges ipod too.
however when i get a 3g iphone i probably will still hold on to the 5th gen for the glovebox. also considering ill be able to keep 60g of tunes on there too.
roll on the 3g iphone
