i've read multiple posts about bad batteries so i was trying to find a good option to extend my battery life as long as possible.
would it be okay to keep the ipod charging in my car while playing music(fm transmitter)?
thanks for you time and reply in advance

Yes, it's definitely fine to keep the iPod touch (or any iPod model) connected while playing it back, or to leave it in the charger.
Basically, the iPod shuts off the charging circuit once the battery reaches full capacity, and simply runs directly from external power after that.
The only caveat is that you shouldn't always leave the iPod plugged in -- run it from the battery at least a couple of times a month, since the battery doesn't get used at all otherwise.

I think Apple recommends that you full charge and full drain your iPod's battery about once a month. Well, they used to recommend this back in the 4G and 5G iPod days but I don't know if they recommend it anymore. That is what I do anyway as it lets me make sure my iPod's battery is performing as it should. I normally charge my iPods almost all the time. I disconnect my iPod touch from my computer, use it 3-4 hours off of he battery while on campus, then come home and plug it back in. I have always used my iPods like this and don't plan on changing. I have a 5G 60GB iPod that I purchased back in December of 2005 that still gets about 22 hours of audio playback time yet it is rated for 20 hours. My 4G iPod gets about 12.5 hours and it is rated for 12 hours, my iPod touch gets about 24 hours of audio playback on a single charge, and my 3G iPod still gets about 6.5 hours of use on a single charge (that is good as Apple said they would get about 8 hours but those estimates were too high and got Apple in legal trouble).

Apple actually has a whole set of pages dedicated to batteries in its products - http://www.apple.com/batteries/

I wouldn't. I know everyone says about that whole automatic charge shutoff but only time will show how reliable that is. Its fine to leave it plugged in for hours but I wouldn't have it plugged in for very long.
