When the touch was first released this is how owners determine various issues, e.g. if they were one of the many that had the negative screen issues.

BTW, 1.1.3 and the new apps were not released until week 3.

Update: A relative ordered his 16GB Touch from the Apple Store and it is a week 3. Same week as the software update. I am assuming that my unit (week 1) from Best Buy was opened, updated and rewrapped?

How do you know which week your iPod touch was produced? Is the information on the box?

Yes, the info is on the back side of the box, below the part number (new p/n = MA627LL/B)

Serial number: XBXXXXXTWXN

the 3rd digit represents the year ie 7 for 2007
the 4th & 5th represent the week ie 39 for week 39

all the rest indicate the factory, or whether it's a refurb, etc.

ok... now if you reset all data and settings, do the programs wipe off too? Mine do... and I had to reinstall Mac OSX so i lost my upgrade on iTunes, and so i can't reset it in case i lose the programs.

I wouldn't try it if i were you, just in case you get charged for another one cos you lose it, but... if you've done it before, let me know :P

Mine is 8 01 so I assume it's a first week 2008 model. The one I sent back which was apparently tampered with at the factory had a seven, so maybe it was opened and updated, than repackaged.

Thanks. Mine is 748 so it's week 48 of 2007. Costco must have had quite a few iPod touches in stock; I bought mine on January 20th!

Did you have to do the upgrade yourself or was it already installed? Per the model #,

MA627LL/A (1.1.3 and new apps not installed)

MA627LL/B (1.1.3 and new apps installed)
