View Full Version : Dead Battery, Which Reason?

Hiya all. Got my touch back in Sept/Oct when they hit the streets. It's been fine ever since, up until a few days ago. I'll be on a full battery charge, watch a couple of music vids, then hit the sleep button and walk away for a while, same as I've always done. When I go back a couple hours later, the battery is totally dead. The only new things I have going on with it are the following:

1. New case, with magnetic bottom. Can the magnetics be causing this? Another thing about the case...could it be hitting the sleep button when I close it, and somehow leaving the unit on?

2. 1.1.3 update. Seemed to go fine when I updated it, nothing crazy happened. But I've been seeing the problems people have been having since the update. If the touch is in sleep mode, can the wifi be turning the unit on, and therefore using up the battery?

Any other ideas/thoughts would be much appreciated, thanx in advance!

1. don't know your case so I can't really say anything about it. but the magnetics cant cause this, no

2. this could be your problem. I read that, when running 1.1.3, the battery lasts about half the time it lasted on 1.1.2, so maybe this is your problem. I myself have not encountered problems with 1.1.3 until now

3. I would always turn wifi off when I don't use it. in sleep mode, the ipod should turn off wifi anyway, but who knows? my wifi is behaving really strange since I updated to 1.1.3. and if your wifi tries to connect all the time your battery is gone in 2 hours or so. turn it off and see what happens.

I know your pretty experience on the jailbreak process i am on 1.1.2 right now with no problems but was wondering....if we jailbreak to 1.1.3 do we lose all our current apps from 1.1.2? Also I heard we need lots of space free, is that true (would 38m free of 300 be fine) judging from boss tools?

I'm having the same problem, too. Happened a little over a week ago. It's incredibly frustrating that the battery has apparently failed so soon.

I had a jailbroke 1.1.2, but I decided to try a restore for two reasons -

1) In case, by chance, one of the 3rd party apps was significantly draining the battery for some reason. I didn't think that was the case, but it was worth a shot especially since I had to do so so I could...

2) ...take it to the Apple store

I'm now at a restored, non-jailbroke 1.1.3 (so no 3rd party apps) and I'm still seeing the issue, so I guess that wasn't it.

I haven't had a chance to go to the Apple store yet. I hope to go this weekend. I guess I should've known better than to get ANY first generation Apple product. Sigh. Hopefully they'll help me there even though I bought it at Target...

did you get the $20 upgrade with the MAIL feature?
if you set the mail to "auto check mail every -- min" this DOES indeed autocheck while its sleeping.

how to test this; if you have no NEW mail in the mailbox, let the touch go to "sleep" mode. (while in a wi-fi area) .. send yourself an email from a computer. and awhile later turn on your ipod. and you will see the second you turned your ipod on there shows new mail in your box, its in there faster than it could possibly check for new mail when you turned it on.

- my battery was weak too, turn the mail option to "manually" check

Thanx BlackWolf, I've turned wifi off and I'm going to keep an eye on it the next few days.

No jailbreak for me, and no to the new upgrade software...it's gotta be either the 1.1.3 update or the new case maybe hitting the sleep button...but if thats the case, wouldn't it (if it was holding it down) automatically shut the touch completely off? Or would it go to the red slider screen and stay on at that screen, thus wearing out the battery?

I can't think of what else it could be.

No go on the wifi possibility. I turned that off yesterday. Today I listened to some music earlier, checked it a few times throughout the day, and the last time I checked it about 20 mins ago, it was dead, I had to hold sleep/home for a few secs to get it back on. This time though, the battery wasn't dead...anyone have a quick link to show me how to go from 1.1.3 back to 1.1.2, if that's even possible?
