as being an average computer user i thought jailbreaking would be easy to do and use after. Yes you get alot of free stuff like games and etc. But it took me a whole day looking at net on which method is better to jailbreak your ipod touch. I found out 1.1.1 is the easiest to jailbreak but the 1.1.2 and above get little more time consuming to do.

*And also the jailbroken apps they say you can get for free instead of paying the $20, well the mail app didnt work on my 1.1.1 jailbroken ipod and also those apollo and chat app, they never connected. WHILE when i had the 1.1.3 apps i bought, the mail app works great, and the Beejive Chat webapp (http://beejive.com/) works 100 times better then those jail broken apps. AND actually connects!

And my ipod touch looked more confusing, like there's extra programs installed in order for other prgrams to work. For example i had 3 apps just made to customize the look of your jailbroken ipod :s. (yes i know you can hide icons but who has time to to this one by one) While with having my regular touch with 1.1.3 w/ bought apps i know where to go no extra stuff and Everything works! hehe

Let's just say i'm the type of guy who likes things simple, straight and foward.

In conclusion u either need to know what your doing or your just a hardcore tech geek :p (in a good way haha).

*The app i really liked was the one that you can play GBA games, the thing that really bugged me was you have to set-up your ipod and install "another" program in order to transfer files to your ipod since the touch doesnt allow you to check the files in its device.

well, if you don't like don't do it.
though I can't really agree with you:

there a videos on youtube explaining step by step what to do and showing it to you. if you can't jailbreak with those videos, well, you just can't jailbreak. it cannot be simpler. you don't need to be a geek or anything, just do as you are told and that's it. I don't say its done in no time, but if you just follow the videos you can jailbreak 1.1.1, 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 in less than an hour. and everyone can do it.

as for the apps: well, apollo isn't that great, I agree, I prefer beejive as well. but all apps are created by normal, private users, not companies, so you can't expect every app to be perfect. don't know about the mail app on 1.1.1. I tried it on 1.1.2 and it worked perfectly fine for me, I installed the $20 app pack on 1.1.3 (hacked) and it works just as fine as before. so I guess you did something wrong, because it normally works like a charm.

and last: of course your home screen gets fuller when you install addition apps. that's the point of this. if you don't like it you can always install an application launcher, remove most icons from your home screen and launch most apps through your launcher.
I mean what did you expect? if you want new apps and install new apps you can't complain that they show up on your homescreen, can you? and with the 1.1.3 $20 pack you can even move them around just the way you like.

Jailbreaking isn't for everyone. Obviously, it's not for you. Just wait for Apple's SDK to be released and you can download whatever apps they make available.

Gotta agree with BlackWolf though. It's not rocket science. I just followed the videos from iPodTouchMaster at www.ipodtouchmaster.com - I figured if this kid could do it, so can I :D

I've jailbroken my touch twice. I now have it back to 1.1.3 with software upgrade. I found that jailbreak made my touch too buggy and unstable. The thing that I dont like about it is that you have to have three or four programs installed to use another one

Just my $0.02

Only program you may need to have installed to use another is BSD Subsystem. Makes sense -- it provides a foundation making app development easier by providing Unix command line utilities.

I'm surprised at people who say how buggy it is -- I typically use mine 4-6 hours a day minimum and I only crash about once a week, if that... oh well, to each his own...

what I meant was like customize+SMB+catagories just to get a custom look which involves a certain amount of work and time to do... Its nice to have jailbroken, but I think ill just wait for the SDK

Well, maybe that's why - I don't go in for hacking the low-level GUI using a combination of apps like that. Most people that I see having issues have Summerboard or Categories installed. Making it unique and customized is everyone's right, but I find it an excellent way to cause significant instability.

You can wait for the SDK, but you can bet your last dollar that Apple isn't going to be letting any third-party put out utilities to customize the GUI through their SDK. Steve Jobs is very controlling about the look & feel and there's no way he wants someone messing with it...

oh I know the GUI won't be allowed to be changed, but as far as better-than-jailbreak apps, maybe the SDK might be the way to go. But I totally agree that if the SDK isn't what was expected as far as apps are concerned, I will definately go back to jailbreak

Thanks for your understanding...
I didn't know the combo of apps would make it buggy and slow. Makes sense though.

I wonder what kind of apps will be fee and which ones will be free. I hardly doubt anybody want to pay for something stupid like an app that shows a burning fireplace like that tv channcel =/.

Imagine: Dinner + Girl + iTouch fire place. LOL

Well I don't have an ipod touch, I'm still trying to decide if I want to get one so I'm browsing around here.

Anyways, I have a PSP and there are a lot of good programs available if you hack it, but I don't care to hack mine because for one you can brick a psp, and secondly its time consuming. So I can definately see why you wouldn't want to hack your ipod. I think hacking these devices is great but for some of us, we just want the device to work as it was made to work and we don't want to put an extra amount of effort to get things to work.

The platform on the iPod Touch isn't even stable enough to warrant modification (jailbreaking) in my opinion I still go through a crash about once or twice every day...either reseting to the main screen in coverflow, or just flat out going to the main screen when I select a song.

Stability needs work on these devices, 1.1.3 only made things worse for me.

Count me in the non-JB crowd as well. I don't see anything wrong with JBing the Touch but for me it serves no real purpose. First, the Touch does everything I bought it to do which is mainly play music and the occasional movie/TV show. Email is nice as is web surfing and U-Tube but I'd rather use my laptop or desktop to take advantage of the large screen. For mobile email I have my Windows Mobile phone that gets email pushed to it no matter where I am or whether I have a WiFi connection. It's much better than the Touch for that purpose. For gaming I have every GameBoy ever made so I don't really need the iPod to do that.

Maybe the SDK will bring some new apps but for now I am quite happy with what the Touch does.
