View Full Version : iPod Touch Question: How's the sharpness?

I don't want to turn this into a PSP vs. iPod Touch thread, but I need to use it as an example.
While I like the PSP, I don't like how the display looks blurry when there's lots action on the screen.
My question is whether or not the iPod Touch's screen is sharper or not. I'm an iPod Classic/5G owner and I think watching videos seems more pleasant for my eyes rather than watching videos on a PSP because they're simply sharper.
For those who don't own a PSP, I'm wondering if the iPod Touch carries over the same traits from the video iPods and plays movies and music videos just as well.

The affect you are seeing on the PSP's screen is not due to its sharpness. Sharpness deals with the resolution of the screen and the PSP's resolution is more than acceptable. You are seeing ghosting, this is when LCD panels don't have a high enough response time. The iPod touch's LCD panel does not experience ghosting. I too have a PSP and know exactly what it looks like. Cheap LCD panels are the ones with slow response times and Sony sure used a cheap LCD panel for the PSP. The revised PSP is a little better but still not what it should be and still not as good as the iPod touch.
So yeah, the iPod touch has a better LCD panel and you won't notice any ghosting.

Thanks for the response. I wanted to say the PSP's LCD has a slow response time, but I wasn't too sure.
I'm glad to see that the iPod Touch doesn't have this "ghosting" effect as well. If only the PSP had a better LCD, I'd actually have more desire to use it. I wonder how much more it would cost to get it fixed anyway?
Edit: For kornchild2002 (or anyone else) -- how do you like watching movies on that baby anyway? I've only seen a few videos on the iPhone and the screen looks great. But, I wonder how the videos were converted? Are the videos (mainly purchased from iTunes) made for regular video iPods and simply stretched for playback on the Touch?

Why does coverflow begin to look fuzzy after viewing it for alittle while?

Movies look fine on the iPod touch. Videos downloaded from the iTunes Store are encoded at 640X480, well beyond the iPod touch's resolution. So the iPod touch actually scales down those videos. You can convert your videos/DVDs as well, there are many free applications that can do this.
As for coverflow looking fuzzy, where did you get your album art?

I got alot from Amazon, and it is not a problem with the resolution. They are all 500 x 500 is available. Its just that the start out sharp, and then get fuzzy after I have been in the coverflow programs for alittle bit.

Basically I have an fm tuner hooked up to my touch, with a car phone holder sticky thing from my window screen.
What I wondered, is there any specific car radios where I can slot in my ipod touch and have things work straight off?
Would be much easier and better without wires going to my ### lighter.

Wouldn't it be better to start your own thread instead of hijacking this one? It is alright but you might get more answers if you actually started a new thread.
There aren't any car decks in which you simply "slot in" (I know what you are talking about) your iPod touch. There are car CD decks that allow you to hook up your iPod touch via a auxiliary input or to actually control the iPod touch using the car CD deck controls. All of this requires cables though. An auxiliary connection could be done using one device. A cable that runs from the back/front of the car CD deck to the iPod touch's headphone adapter. There are accessories that have a line-out on them and charge your iPod at the same time so that could be an option. The other way (where you control the iPod touch using the car CD deck's controls) requires that you purchase a hardware box. This box is very small and fits in your trunk, under the driver's seat, right behind the CD deck, etc. It is about the size of two CD cases. You then plug your iPod into this box via a USB to dock connector cable (like the one that came with your iPod touch) and it will charge and control your iPod touch.
As for the coverflow, I haven't got a clue then. You could try restoring your iPod touch. It shouldn't get blurry the more you are in it. There was actually a time when my iPod touch was in coverflow mode for 1 hour and all the album art was still clear. I plugged my iPod touch into my car CD deck and placed it in the passenger seat. The trip lasted about one hour and by the time I got there, I realized that my iPod touch was in coverflow mode the entire time.
