New Mail Sound?

I was reading the online ipod touch manual on the internet and it claims you can have the ipod play a sound when new mail arrives. The setting does not exsist and I was wondering if it worked for anyone else?

I can hear a 'ding' when I have my iPod docked to my speaker system. I'm impressed that the audio also ducks making that ding even easier to hear. Now only if you could customize the incoming email sound. I really want that Eurotrip incoming email sound on my Touch!

I was wearing my earphones when I recieved an email and didnt make a sound. Do you have to turn it on in the settings? or do you have to be listening to music or watching videos? I was just surfing and it didnt make a sound I thought it might have to do with having sound effects off so I switched it on but still didnt work.

well, it makes sound when you get new mail. for example, during listening to music, if you get mail, song volume automatically reduces little bit. then you can hear new mail arrival sound. it's the same way during watching video.

I personally find that to be ridiculous - that the sound only comes through the headphones. Am I the only one that uses an iPod touch as a PDA as well as a media player? You don't always plug your headphones in your handheld device!

You never hear the "new mail sound" over your speakers? That's odd! I hear it on my JBL Onstage.. Yep right over the dock connector. Go into...

settings/general/sound effects

Then make sure "both" is selected. This should enable the mail sound on both your headphones and whatever attached speakers you are using.

Oh and you aren't the only one, I use my Touch more as a video heavy PDA than I do for music.. It does exactly everything I wanted in a PDA and in many ways better.
