View Full Version : Files are "updated" after they're played on iTunes

I'm just curious why this happens. Let's say I have a song that's synced between iTunes and my iPod touch. If I play that song on iTunes and then connect my iPod touch to the computer, then the particular music file gets "updated" even though the file itself did not change at all. What's going on?

actually, if you havn't changed anything about the file this shouldn't happen. so as long as you didn't change filename, any tags, cover, lyrics or anything like that it should not update.

if it keeps happening I'd try restoring the ipod.

That's what I thought, too, but I'm apparently not the only one. I'd be reluctant to restore the iPod when that's the only issue I have. I wonder if information such as the last time played is also synched with the iPod touch?

It should be - along with the position in the file (if you have it set to remember position) and even if you skipped the file...

Perhaps the play count gets updated? Just a thought.

That would explain it. Is it something new with the iPod touch? I don't think I've had the same thing happen to my old iPod classic, but I could be mistaken...

Play count, last time listened, etc...

no it would not. other ipods support playcounts etc. and my touch of course supports that too, and I don't get my files updated all the time. this is because things like playcounts/skipcounts etc. are stored in the itunes database and not in the file itself. so even if those things change the file does not need to be transfered again.

like I said: I own a touch and this is not normal behaviour. Since it would bug the hell out of me I'd do a restore, but if it's not that bad for you you don't have to.
