.... time for a round-up I think.

I'll soon be in the market for a new head unit - nothing too flash, just a normal DIN sized H/U.

However - it MUST be totally compatible with my Classic 80gb.

I currently have a Kenwood KDC-W707 / KCA-IP500 combination, which is a disaster with the Classic - won't charge, wont' shut down the iPod therefore drains power etc.etc.

I'm aware of the Alpine IDA-X001, and the replacement IDA-X100 which will be available soon, but what about offerings from Pioneer? - or the newer Kenwood usb connected units?

I'm looking for opinions from people who have iPod Classics, and who can tell me whether or not they have total functionality with a particular unit. There are so many conflicting stories about compatibility that my head is spinning, so can somebody tell me the facts?

Many thanks in advance.

Chris

I bought my daughter one of the latest Alpines with the "Full Speed" interface. It worked great with my classic. :)

Yes, most of them do, but my iPod is an 80gb Classic - yours is a 5G.

It seems to be only the Classic that has compatibility problems with a lot of in-car gear.

It's high time that we had a separate forum for Classic users - I've suggested this in the feedback forum but it hasn't been taken up.

I believe it is the Alpine 9874 (http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=300&i=500CDE9874&c=3&tp=5684&avf=N) that my daughter has. I installed it myself and tested it with my classic, and she has a 5G 30 gigger. That deck also support AAC discs. My local dealer threw in the cable for free. :D

Welshechris - let me know if you find anything. I am in the same market as you. I thought I could just find a mass storage device USB stereo that could handle the IPOD classic 80GB, but looks like nothing yet.

If u MUST have HU control, then ignore this reply.

I gravitate toward standard AUX connection, any head basically, HU never goes obsolete, works for EVERTHING. Ideally u should get one with a bluetooth A2DP/AVRC profiles if yer betting the next iPod will have wireless.

yes I understand

A2DP - stereo bluetooth streaming music for headphones, with controls.

AVRC - bluetooth audio video remote controls (guessing here)

If you bluetooth 2.0 does not support these communication protocals it is too old school. need to have a bluetooth that supports this.
