Hi, I want to get the Logitech Bluetooth iPod headset/transmitter combo, but it's made for the old style headphone/remote control plug of the Mini's and older ipods. A friend already has this, with a short 3.5mm extension cable which lets him use the Bluetooth transmitter with his 80gb classic, except of course the ipod controls on the headset don't work because that little tab in the transmitter isn't plugged into the ipod.
Since the little tab isn't needed to power the device or anything, is it possible to just snip it off to let the adapter sit flush against a new ipod without having to use a 3.5mm extension cable and have the adapter dangling all over the place?
Logitech has released new versions of the combo since then with just the 3.5mm plug, but the older ones are less than $25 usd pretty much everywhere, so that's why I want to get that one.
Thanks in advance.

Anyone know if it's safe to cut that little tab off?

I believe that tab is for power transfer, without which it won't function.

I have that exact model and it came with 3 inch extension cable that fits in between the little tab and the work great. With that cable in place the tab isnt getting any power so I think you would be ok if you remove it. I wouldn't just cut it off though, I would open it up and snip the wires going to it first since you wouldn't want to short it.

Awesome thanks, that's what I figured.
bobbit: It's charged with a usb cable, so it's not taking any power from the ipod. The only function the little tab serves is for devices with a remote control on them, like this headset. It has controls on one side, but all the data for controls is sent through that little tab, so although the sound works flawlessly with the extension cord like meir87 said, the controls on the headphones are disabled. For $24, I'll take em! Thanks for the help.

I meant power for the transmitter (to power the light and the BlueTooth module.)
But okay : )

If the transmitter has its own battery (charging port), AND you are able to work it with an extension cable alone, then it's safe to snip it off.

Yes and yes.
bobbit, the transmitter and the headphones each have a usb mini port for charging. They don't rely on the ipod for anything except an audio signal. The tab is only for control-enabled accessories.
Ordered them earlier today, I'll open them up and disconnect the wires going to that tab before I make it sit flush. I tried on my friend's headphones, and though they're understandably slightly bigger than other neckband headphones, they are lightweight and the sound quality is much better than oem earbuds. I have a headphone adapter for my iphone, so i'll use that as the extension since it's only as long as it needs to be.
