can i upgrade apps on several machines with a single purchase?

how exactly does this software upgrade thing works?
i purchased the $20 upgrade, my wife and i each have a ipod touch, will both of us be able to upgrade? or does this upgrading process uploads the machines s/n to apple, so it's bundled with a specific machine?

What's the process? I purchased the apps for my 16G and my daughter has one as well. So, please share on how to do this! It would be nice for me to be able to put the apps on my daughter's touch as well.
